Hulu scooped up Siobhan Cullen's delightful comic murder-romp Obituary almost a year ago, in October 2023, just in time for the Halloween season. A semi-satirical take on the "unlikely duo solves endless murders in a tiny little town whose population could never support this much death," Cullen plays Elvira Clancy, whose job as the Obituary columnist at the local paper her father runs, serving the small Irish town where she grew up, is threatened by budget cuts, as not enough residents passing away to keep her full time. Frustrated and angry, Elvira accidentally discovers that her job can be saved... she just has to help a few of the more elderly residents along. Unfortunately, her solution creates another job at the paper: a surprisingly hot investigative journalist looking into the unusual spate of deaths in town.

Season 1 revealed that Elvira's proclivities toward taking lives started far earlier than she realized. It turns out that the town's oldest cold case was also her fault. However, it also luckily handed her a solution for framing co-worker Hughie Burns. Even better, upon his arrest it turns out he's been embezzling funds from the paper, fixing the budget crisis that would have cost Elvira her job, and making his imprisonment for murders he did not commit go down a lot smoother. (One could argue, after all, had he not embezzled, Elvira would not have been driven to kill in the first place. So he is guilty... well, kinda.)

The first season ended with Elvira happily hooking up with the investigative reporter and cleared of suspicion. However, the conclusion also sadly took the life of her father, Ward (Michael Smiley). Season 2 will pick up a few months after the events of Season 1 as Elvira tries to deal with her grief without killing anyone.

Here's the Season 2 synopsis:

Season 2 sees Elvira struggling with the death of her beloved father. Again, she seeks relief in killing but is beaten to the act by a mysterious new murderer in town. A local cop, Detective Rose, suspects Elvira of the crime, which, in this case, she hasn’t committed. Elvira becomes determined to solve the murder herself and meet a potential kindred spirit.

Cullen returns as Elvira with Ronan Raftery (Gangs of London) as her boyfriend, crime reporter Emerson Stafford. Other Season 1 returnees include Noni Stapleton (Harry Wild) as Detective Rose and David Ganly (Ridley Road) as Hughie Burns. Máiréad Tyers (Extraordinary) joins the cast as the newspaper's new editor, Vivienne.

Ray Lawlor (Le Ceangal) will once again pen all six episodes of the new season, and directors Rachel Carey (Deadly Cuts) and Gary Shore (Dracula Untold) are on board to split helming duties. Season 2 filming in County Donegal has just begun.

Obituary Season 2 will most likely arrive on RTE and Hulu in 2025.
