'The Law According to Lidia Poët' Will Argue Another Season
It's official: Netflix Italian Original The Law According to Lidia Poët will return for a third season. The drama, loosely based on the life of Italy's first female lawyer, is one part legal procedural, one part family drama, one part feminist manifesto, and one of the most underrated series on the streamer. A case-of-the-week series, it stars Matilda De Angelis (The Undoing) as the titular Lidia, who takes a job at her brother's law firm following her public disbarment. Lidia helps with cases even as she uses her newfound notoriety to advocate for greater legal rights for women. Much like Miss Scarlet, Lidia's clients are women, and the cases focus on specifically female experiences in ways most procedurals rarely consider.
Tinny Andreatta, VP of Content for Italy, announced the renewal news at the December 2024 Content London event. The news is a lovely surprise in a year marked by the abrupt cancellations of multiple buzzy and beloved series on the streaming service. It is also a welcome example of Netflix's ongoing commitment to creating international programming.
If the renewal news comes as a surprise, it's because Season 2 of Lidia Poët reportedly underperformed compared to the breakout success of the show's first outing. However, it is undoubtedly the Netflix Italian Original with the most mainstream recognition at the moment, so perhaps that allowed Lidia's story to continue.
No details about Season 3 were offered beyond the fact that it would once again star De Angelis as Lidia. The series' second season ended with Lidia's on-again/off-again love interest Jacopo (Eduardo Scarpetta) headed to Rome for work, and though her flirtation with handsome new prosecutor Fourneau (Gianmarco Saurino) certainly seems promising, he has some health issues of his own to deal with. This is a lot to say that it's possible neither of these men will be an option for Lidia in the series' third season, so we'll have to wait and see.
Alongside De Angelis, Season 2 also included Pier Luigi Pasino (Lovely Boy) as Lidia's brother, Enrico Poët; Sara Lazzaro (The Young Pope) as Enrico's wife, Teresa Barberis; and Sinéad Thornhill (Pale Mountains) as their daughter Marianna Poët. As these are our heroine's most immediate family members, it seems a safe guess they'll all be back, if only because I can't imagine a version of this show that isn't built around Lidia and Enrico's relationship.
Guido Iuculano and Davide Orsini created The Law According to Lidia Poet and wrote Season 2 alongside Flamina Grassi. They are also assumed to pen the bulk of Season 3. Directors Matteo Rovere, Letizia Lamartire, and Pippo Mezzapesa split helming duties across the second season's six installments, with Rovere also serving as a series producer. Rovere and Lamartire also helmed Season 1, so it's a good bet they'll be back sharing the director's chair for the next set of episodes.
The Law According to Lidia Poët Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix.
