Will There Be More 'Jack Wright'? Shocking Finale Leaves Fans Hanging

The rise of "Prestige TV" has had multiple effects on the entertainment landscape, most of which have been positive developments. High-quality literature, some of which was never considered a possibility for TV adaptations prior to the successes of Game of Thrones and Outlander in the early 2010s, began making its way to the small screen. The invisible class system in Hollywood that placed "movie actors" over "TV actors" began to break down as more big-screen actors started taking the newly created meaty TV roles. However, there has been one major downside: the standard TV executive has been trained to believe that, when a show is a hit, it gets renewed, whether there's more story to tell or not.
The most well-known of the "limited series" that suddenly found themselves with a second season and no more novel left to cover is the Liane Moriarty series Big Little Lies, the second season of which wound up being an absolute disaster. Other series have similarly struggled — The Handmaid's Tale was heading off the rails until author Margaret Atwood stepped in with a sequel novel, giving the series an endpoint to aim for; Game of Thrones crumpled the moment it ran out of book structure to work from.
However, this has also given rise to a new category, the "surprise it's not a limited series!" show, where the biggest twist is that the series finale is merely a season finale, and viewers are forced to wait until the series is renewed, lest the last shot be a title card reading "To Be Continued." That's what series creator Chris Lang has done with his not-so-limited-after-all series I, Jack Wright, which concluded its run on UKTV and BritBox this week with precisely that. However, neither BritBox nor UKTV has said whether there will be a second season of the show.... at least not yet.
The show's finale concluded with Reuben arrested for the murder of Jack Wright, and his main squeeze, Jack's granddaughter, Emily, charged with conspiracy to hire someone to murder her grandfather. However, Emily's grandmother, the terminally ill Rose, clearly believes that her life is forfeit anyway and ends the finale by walking into the police station and insisting she is the guilty party.
Considering there's at least one other character who is in jail when this is all over — the series has shown Sally Wight in prison down the line in the show's flash forwards to the present day, though it seems not for Jack's murder — that's a lot of loose ends lying around. Whether or not they will get answered, even if the show does get commissioned to "be continued," remains to be seen.
The cast of I, Jack Wright is a who's who of BBC talent, including former guest stars who starred in Unforgotten's first season, with Trevor Eve, taking the titular role of the dead Jack Wright in flashbacks. The current suspects left after Season 1's finale, and therefore almost assuredly returning include Gemma Jones as his first wife, Rose; Nikki Amuka-Bird (Luther) as his third wife, Sally; Zoë Tapper (Grace) as daughter-in-law Georgia; and Ruby Ashbourne Serkis (Becoming Elizabeth) as granddaughter Emily.
Other co-stars expected to return include Harry Lloyd (The Lost King) and Liz Kingsman (Hijack) as the officers assigned to the case, DCI Hector Morgan and DC Katie Jones; John Simm (Doctor Who) as Jack's older son, Gray Wright; Daniel Rigby (Landscapers) as younger son John; James Fleet (Tom Jones) as Rose's new partner, Bobby; Samuel Small (The Nest) as Sally's son, Josh; Percelle Ascott (Domino Day) as Emily's boytoy, Reuben; and newcomer Eden Hollingsworth as Josh's sister, Daisy.
Should Season 2 be greenlit, Chris Lang will pen all episodes, director Tom Vaughan (Doctor Foster) returning to helm, and Nickie Sault (The Outlaws) producing.
All episodes of I, Jack Wright Season 1 are available to stream on BritBox in the U.S. Season 2 has not yet been greenlit.
Chris Lang's other popular series, Unforgotten, returns with Season 6 on most PBS stations on Sunday, August 24, 2025. Seasons 1 through 5 are available for members to stream on PBS Passport.
