Unlike the U.S., which stretches 3000 miles across (not counting the extra non-contiguous states), the U.K. still can create monocultural dominance in their entertainment ecosystem on the regular, with series like The Great British Baking Show and Mr. Bates vs the Post Office able to pull in double-digit millions of viewers at the same time to the same channel. But the BBC has not been unaffected by the splintering of the TV universe. It is also drilling into creating its own version of niche offerings by allowing Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland to tell their own stories, even with bog-standard police procedurals like Granite Harbour.

To be fair, whenever diverse voices of any stripe can create their versions of the same seven stories humans supposedly tell, our society is better for it. Moreover, in the U.K., where storytelling and entertainment have become one of the country's main exports, the more filming and series creation can be shifted to other areas of the country, the better it is economically for everyone. That's why it's such a big deal that the BBC has opened a Midlands filming hub and commissions Welsh-based dual language shows.

Granite Harbour was one of the BBC's early forays into Scottish Noir mysteries, by and for BBC Scotland. The glossy series features the unlikely pairing of an ex-Royal Military policeman and a down-home Scottish police sergeant who have become the area's pre-eminent crime-solving team. Its renewal for a third set of episodes is proof the show is here to stay.

Here's the Season 3 logline:

The third series sees Sgt Davis Lindo and DCI Lara ‘Bart’ Bartlett investigate a suspicious death in the traveling community at an estate on the outskirts of Aberdeen. As the investigation gets underway, Lindo and Bart must navigate a complicated cross-community romance that uncovers a complex past.

Romario Simpson (Riches) and Hannah Donaldson (Payback) return as Lindo and Bart for Season 3, alongside core cast members Bhav Joshi (The Diplomat) as DI Jay Mallick, Dawn Steele (Shetland) as DCI Cora MacMillan, and Michelle Jeram (Liar) as DS Simone ‘Monty’ Montrose. The rest of the season's cast populating the new case is expected to be announced in due course.

Season 3 will see Rob Fraser step into the lead writer role, with Ciara Conway and Jillian Mannion also returning to pen episodes. Directors will be announced closer to filming, with Donna Molloy producing. Executive producers are Gavin Smith for BBC Scotland, Gaynor Holmes for BBC One, and Colin McKeown for LA Productions.

Granite Harbour Season 3 will film in Aberdeenshire and Glasgow in mid-to-late 2025, with an eye on a 2026 release date.
