Crime thriller After the Flood has been officially renewed for a second season by ITV and BritBox. While the series received mixed reviews from critics, strong ratings and an ending that essentially demanded a continuation means the drama will be back for more sleuthing in a Yorkshire town that seems plagued by environmental disaster.

After the Flood stars Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders) as scrappy PC Jo Marshall, who finds a dead body in a local parking garage after a devastating flood. The series' first season ended on an emotional cliffhanger that saw Daniel Eden's killer turn out to be a familiar face and left viewers wondering whether Jo will reveal all about the corruption she's discovered during her investigation. Would she reveal her own wrongdoings in the name of the greater good or become complicit by keeping silent?

Considering that Season 2 will apparently open with Jo's promotion to detective, it seems as though we can probably guess which way that went. (At least to some degree.) The six-episode second outing will see Jo investigate another body found in mysterious circumstances after --- you guessed it! --- more flooding takes place. Per the official description, this case will force her to confront the corruption that has flourished both on the force and in her own family, so perhaps there's still hope yet that she might do the right thing.

“I am thrilled to be returning to After the Flood for another series alongside the fantastic cast and team at Quay Street Productions," Rundle said in a statement. "I can’t wait to get started and see what mystery is next in store for Jo to solve now she is officially a detective.”

Here's the Season 2 synopsis.

The second series of After the Flood finds newly promoted detective Jo Marshall on the trail of a baffling murder investigation. As tensions simmer in Waterside amid the rising threat of moorland fires and the subsequent risk of further flooding, a body is discovered in bizarre circumstances. Jo's race to stop the killer will put her in opposition to dark, influential forces within the town, and ultimately take her on a much more personal investigation. One that will require her to operate in secret if she is to have any hope of rooting out the corruption that has blighted the town's police force - and her own family - for decades.

Alongside Rundle, returning cast members include Philip Glenister (Belgravia) as Jack Radcliffe; Nicholas Gleaves (The Crown) as Sargeant Phil Mackie; Matt Stokes (The Hunt for Raoul Moat) as Jo's husband, Pat; and Lorraine Ashbourne (Sherwood) as Jo's mother Molly,

Series creator Mick Ford (Stay Close) returns as lead writer on the second season, with BritBox International signing on as co-production partner for the drama. Azhur Saleem (Doctor Who) will also be back to direct episodes 1-3.

After the Flood was a top-performing series when it premiered on BritBox across our markets," Robert Schildhouse, President BritBox North America and General Manager, BritBox International said. "Anchored by the expertise of Nicola Shindler & Richard Fee at Quay Street, Mick Ford’s moving writing, and Sophie Rundle’s compelling performance, we know BritBox viewers will be captivated by the new season.”

Ford is also an executive producer, alongside Nicola Shindler (Nolly) and Richard Fee (Fool Me Once) for Quay Street Productions, Huw Kennair-Jones for ITV, and Robert Schildhouse and Stephen Nye for BritBox International.

After the Flood Season 2 will premiere on ITV1 and ITVX in the U.K., and BritBox in North America, Australia, and the Nordics. Filming is set to begin next year in and around Greater Manchester and Derbyshire.
