Britain's National Theatre not only consistently produces some of the best live theater in the world, but it's also one of the most accessible. Not just in terms of its physical home at London's Southbank Theatre but also to global audiences. Its National Theatre Live program, which releases filmed versions of many of its productions in cinemas worldwide, just screened its 100th broadcast last year, and its unique at-home streaming service allows subscribers to watch both new and classic performances on demand.

Last week, the National Theatre announced that its buzzy production of Inter Alia will arrive in theaters in September. Playwright Suzie Miller's highly anticipated follow-up to her award-winning Prima Facie will mark the National Theatre debut of The Wheel of Time star Rosamund Pike, who returns to the London stage for the first time in fifteen years.

Pike will play a British High Court judge who is forced to reckon with conflict in her professional and private life while trying to hold both together. The story is described as a "searing examination of modern masculinity and motherhood" and, if Prima Facie is anything to go by, will probably feature multiple painfully on-point monologues about modern life as a woman.

Miller's Prima Facie was a theatrical juggernaut, a one-woman tour-de-force that won its star Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) rave reviews and some serious awards hardware — a Tony Award and an Olivier — in 2023. Theater lovers are likely expecting similar accolades for Pike.

Here's the play's description.

Jessica Parks is smart, compassionate, a true maverick at the top of her career as an eminent London Crown Court Judge. At work she’s changing and challenging the system one case at a time. But behind the robe, Jessica is a karaoke fiend, a loving wife and a supportive parent.

While managing the impossible juggling act faced by every working mother, an event threatens to throw her life completely off balance. Can she hold her family upright?

“Following the success of the National Theatre Live release of Prima Facie, which has now been seen on the big screen by 1.4 million people, I’m thrilled to have Inter Alia broadcast to cinemas," Miller said in a statement. "I’ve witnessed firsthand how NT Live can not only reach but deeply connect with and impact audiences across the world, and I hope this play will do the same.”

Joining Pike in the cast are Jamie Glover (Agatha Raisin) and Jasper Talbot (Broadchurch). The production is directed by Justin Martin, who directed Comer in both the West End and Broadway productions of Prima Facie

The creative team includes set and costume designer Miriam Buether, lighting designer Natasha Chivers, sound designers Ben and Max Ringham, video designer Willie Williams for Treatment Studio, and casting directors Alastair Coomer and Naomi Downham.

Inter Alia will begin performances in July, and the run will continue through September 13 at the National Theatre's Lyttleton Theatre. The play will broadcast live to cinemas around the UK on September 4, before releasing to cinemas around the world beginning September 25. Audiences can find their nearest screening at interalia.ntlive.com.
