PBS has been off cycle from the commercial TV world ever since it discovered it could have the entirety of January to itself. However, spring is still a significant part of the schedule, especially when Masterpiece has a series it genuinely believes can compete in the yearly Primetime Emmy push.
It's been almost a decade since PBS thought it might have an Emmy competitor. To be fair, it's been almost that long since any of the broadcast networks have been competitive, as the rise of prestige TV first put cable, and then streaming at the top of the food chain. Since 2017, NBC has been the only broadcast network to land even a nomination in the coveted Best Drama category; the last time a broadcast network actually won it was in 2007.
But the return of Wolf Hall a decade on isn't your regular run-of-the-mill TV. Between the utterly rapturous reviews from the U.K. and the Academy-and-BAFTA Award winning cast, here's a sense that public broadcasting might have a real shot with this series, making it THE show arriving in March to watch, even if you cannot imagine sitting through yet another reteling of King Henry VIII and his personal divorce court.
Wolf Hall isn't the only show coming to PBS in March, there's also the return of Lucy Worsley, several Walter Presents shows, and of course, Call the Midwife. Here's the full rundown.
'The Cleaner' Season 1
For those who don't have BritBox, PBS will kick off March with the debut of one of the U.K.-focused streaming services' hidden gems: The Cleaner. Created, written by, and starring Greg Davies (The Inbetweeners), this cozy crime series spoof stars Davies as Wicky, a one-man ServPro for crime scenes. When the detectives finish their work, Wicky moves in, armed with his bleach and scrubbing brushes, meeting the strangest people: those who knew the victims – and sometimes even the killers themselves. Each episode features a new crime scene and a new A-List guest star who may or may not be the culprit, Season 1 includes Helena Bonham Carter, David Mitchell, and Stephanie Cole.
All six episodes of The Cleaner Season 1 land on some PBS stations and select PBS Passports starting Saturday, March 1, 2025. Check your local listings & streaming services.
'Coronation Girls'
Also arriving on the first day of the month: the feature-length 2024 documentary Coronation Girls. In the summer of 1953, philanthropist Garfield Weston sponsored 50 teenage girls to travel from rural Canada to London, where they witnessed the coronation procession of young Queen Elizabeth. Seeing a young woman so close in age to themselves take on the weight of the Crown inspired and shaped them. The documentary finds those still living 70 years on and follows them as they return to Buckingham Palace to say goodbye to the late queen.
Coronation Girls debuts on some PBS stations and select PBS Passports starting Saturday, March 1, 2025. Check your local listings & streaming services.
'My Life is Murder' Season 2
Acorn TV doesn't technically have a flagship show now that Doc Martin has ended, but if it did, it would probably be My Life Is Murder. The Lucy Lawless starring New Zealand cozy crime show was snapped up by Acorn TV, which then became the driving force in keeping the show going. Season 1 debuted in April 2024 on select PBS stations, a year later, we're getting Season 2, where the production reconfigured the cast and tweaked the setting, turning it into the series still running today. (Season 5 is expected on Acorn TV before the end of 2025.) This is Season 2's first time streaming on PBS Passport and airing on linear stations, so once again, check those local listings.
All episodes of My Life is Murder Season 2 are streaming on some PBS stations and select PBS Passport stations starting Saturday, March 1, 2025. Check your local listings and streaming services.
'New Blood'
Since Masterpiece decided a show called Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue wasn't really its style, March will bring a different Anthony Horowitz series to PBS: 2016's New Blood. The one-season wonder stars Mark Strepan as Stefan Kowolski and Ben Tavassoli as Arrash 'Rash' Sayyad, a pair of junior investigators who discover they are each working different angles of the same case. You may not recognize the two leads, but the supporting cast is all A-List, including Mark Addy, Anna Chancellor, Ariyon Bakare, Kimberley Nixon, Aiysha Hart, and Mark Bonner.
All seven episodes of New Blood are streaming on some PBS stations and select PBS Passport stations starting Saturday, March 1, 2025. Check your local listings and streaming services.
'R.I.P. Henry'
Walter Presents starts off March with the 2023 Nordic series R.I.P. Henry. Mads Ousdal stars as the titular Henry Johnsen, a supercilious gifted surgeon who has spent his career stuck in the tiny town of Odda. But when he's diagnosed with a rare brain tumor, Johnsen moves to make a fresh start at a prestigious hospital in Bergen, where he secretly works to find a cure for what ails him.
All eight episodes of R.I.P. Henry debut on PBS Passport and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel on Friday, March 7, 2025.
'Murder in Sweden' (Maria Wern) Season 4
Ah yes, one of my least favorite series, not because of the plot or characters, but because Walter Presents insists on renaming the show Murder in Sweden, a completely ungooglable title. (Won't somebody PLEASE think of the SEO?) I have struggled to identify the series over the years and guessed wrong. Season 4 finally was kind enough to name the lead character in the synopsis: Maria Wern, which only happens to be the show's actual name in Sweden. Considering that is a perfectly servicable (and very googlable) name, I cannot explain why Walter Presents changed it, especially since they were totally fine to rename shows like SOKO Potsdam after lead characters who don't even last for the entire run.
(I was correct that the show ran through Season 9, so there's five more seasons to come.)
Listen, if you've been watching this show, you know I've misidentified it several times and you watched it anyway, so keep on doing your thing, I'll be over here trying to figure out my way out of a paper bag. All episodes of Murder in Sweden Season 4 will stream on PBS Passport and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel on Friday, March 14, 2025.
'Davos 1917'
Due to a certain billionaire's tech conference, most Americans have heard of Davos, the tiny town in Switzerland, the show's title, Davos 1917, gives away this is a World War I-set miniseries exploring the stories of those stuck in the famously "neutral" country. Inspired by the true stories of those who understood that when you're facing authoritarianism, "neutral = collaborator," Davos 1917 dives into the story of the women who worked as nurses in the town's main hospital, many of whom were recruited to work as spies for one side or the other.
All six episodes of Davos 1917 debut on PBS Passport and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel on Friday, March 21, 2025.
'Lucy Worsley Investigates' Season 2, Part 2
Picking up two months after Episode 3 (of 4) aired on most PBS stations, Lucy Worsley Investigates returns with Season 2's final episode. The titular celebrity historian already did episodes deep diving into Jack the Ripper, William the Conqueror, and Guy Fawkes. The final episode will focus on the legend of Bloody Mary.
Lucy Worsley Investigates Season 2's final episode debuts on most PBS stations, the PBS app, and the PBS documentary Prime Video Channel on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET. The first three episodes are already on PBS Passport, the last will join them that day.
'Wolf Hall: The Mirror & The Light'
The most anticipated PBS Masterpiece show of 2025 is Wolf Hall: The Mirror & the Light. (No Season 2s here, the show is far too upscale prestige to admit that technically this is a series revival on par with Roseanne's The Connors.) It's been a decade since the show last aired, but only a few minutes in the 1500s, which opens in the aftermath of Anne Boleyn's execution and covers the final four years of Thomas Cromwell's life as he attempts to manage Henry VIII's declining mental health through his third wedding to Jane Seymour and then procures Henry VIII's fourth wife and second-divorce-ex-to-be, Princess Anne of Cleves.
Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light will premiere on most local PBS stations, the PBS App, and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET. All six episodes of the new series will be available on PBS Passport for members to stream starting on premiere day. Wolf Hall Season 1 is available to stream for members on PBS Passport and on the Prime Video Masterpiece Channel.
'Marie Antoinette' Season 2
It's been two years since the debut of the British-French series Marie Antoinette, starring German actress Emilia Schüle as the titular last queen of France before the French Revolution and Louis Cunningham as her ill-suited-to-rule husband, Louis XVI. Season 2 will open with the two now firmly in charge of the Palace and the country, at the height of their power, and will trace the downfall coming their way.
Marie Antoinette Season 2 will premiere on most local PBS stations, the PBS App, and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at 10 p.m. ET. All eight episodes will be available on PBS Passport for members to stream starting on premiere day.
'Paradise' (Il Paradiso Delle Signore) Season 7
After taking the Italian nighttime soap Paradise (Il Paradiso Delle Signore, also called The Ladies Paradise), which ran two seasons of 20 episodes a piece, and streaming them as four ten episodes seasons, Walter Presents finally decided to bite the bullet and start bringing over the 2018 revival which turned the show into a daytime soap with 180 episodes a season. The first ten episodes of Season 3 turned up with "Season 5" in October 2024, and then ten more in December as "Season 6." Ten episodes every two-three months looks to be the pattern, as "Season 7" arrives with another ten installments, and plot that definitely confirms this is early Season 3, as Vito and Marta start th show's long term on-and-off again relationship. (The series is still going; slightly reduced to 160 episodes a year, Season 9 debuted in 2024. I guess this show will outlive us all.)
All ten episodes of Paradise Season 7 arrive on Friday, March 28, 2025, on PBS Passport and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel.
'Call the Midwife' Season 14
If you are wondering why poor Lucy Worsley had her Season 2 finale episode cleaved from the rest of the season to sit awkwardly in the 8 p.m. slot ahead of the debuts of Wolf Hall and Marie Antoinette, here it is: Call The Midwife Season 14, debuting one week late. Much like Vienna Blood Season 4 starting a week early in January, this is all due to episode count mismatch: Wolf Hall has six which will be directly followed by Miss Austen in the same time slot with four, while Marie Antoinette and Call The Midwife each have eight. By delaying the popular period medical drama by one week, PBS will have both the 8 and 10 p.m. shows still airing on either side of Miss Austen when it arrives the first weekend in May 2025, and ensures Call The Midwife and Miss Austen will wrap up together just before Memorial Day.
Call the Midwife Season 14 premieres on most PBS stations, the PBS app, and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET. However, for those who would not like to put up with scheduling induced delays, PBS Passport members get the show on early release beginning Friday, February 28, 2025, and will follow a weekly release schedule through mid-April. For non-PBS Passport members, the series will stream on the PBS app and the PBS Masterpiece Channel through mid-May. As always, check your local listings.
