British Shows Dominate The Emmy 2024 Nominations
The Emmys are the broadest of the big four American award categories, encompassing everything from feature films that air on TV to digital shorts on YouTube. But after a strike that took up the majority of 2023, the 2024 Emmys struggled. The absence of significant drama shows debuting before the cut-off made what is usually the top category a challenging brief to fill. While comedies did well, the entire nominations list found itself doing what streaming services have been doing since Netflix imported the entire BBC 2 lineup in 2014: filling the gaps with British shows.
However, the choices were....odd, to say the least. The Crown, which has been a dominant series, faltered in its final season, but you wouldn't know it from the nominations. Meanwhile, The Gilded Age barely scraped by avoiding the canceled guillotine by inches... but you wouldn't know it from the nominations! Meanwhile, Shogun and The Traitors walked in with the self-assurance of two series that know they're shoo-ins to win this year.
From nominations to the British-ish Three-Body Problem to the excretable Baby Reindeer to a surprise nomination to Red, White & Royal Blue, it felt like the British were walking away with America's main TV award show again. Let's run down everyone who got nominated this year, from the surprises to the shoo-ins.
