Back in February, during the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, FX initially set mid-April 2024 as the debut date for Welcome to Wrexham Season 3. It was a surprise announcement for fans, who were used to the series airing in the summer and fall after the events of the spring football season in the U.K. had ended and the series had time to edit the documentary-style series into a narrative. But with the Wrexham team improving by leaps and bounds under the ownership of A-list stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds and the wins stacking up, the series felt it was time to air much closer to the actual events of the season so fans could get a more real-time reaction.

Unfortunately, April turned out to be a little too quick a turnaround for the production to handle, but only by a week or two. The show was quietly postponed to a May premiere a few weeks later. That still gives the show the ability to boast that this season, “with the team taking their place in the EFL, Welcome to Wrexham’s cameras will have unprecedented access on the pitch, bringing viewers inside the locker room and alongside the players, while the action is unfolding in some of the biggest matches Wrexham AFC has ever played.” However, it does give the editors a touch of breathing room to allow the story to be crafted into a narrative whole.

And from the looks of it, it’s going to be a joyous narrative; with only days to go before the new season’s premiere, Wrexham has already made history again. On Saturday, April 13, The Red Dragons snagged a 6-0 win over Forest Green, landing the team a promotion to League One, the third-highest league in the U.K.

Here is the Season 3 synopsis:

In 2020, Rob and Ryan teamed up to purchase the 5th-tier Red Dragons in the hopes of turning the Club into an underdog story the whole world could root for. The world took notice and change is afoot. After 15 painful seasons in the National League, the Club finally achieved promotion back into the English Football League. The stakes have never been higher as League Two brings a new level of intensity, and the Club continues to be plagued with injury and setbacks. Dedicated staff and supporters celebrate the city’s return to glory while bracing for the new-found challenges that come with a return to the EFL. Will Wrexham AFC stand up to the challenge and rise again?

Meanwhile, Wrexham AFC’s Women’s Team, fresh off an undefeated season that saw them promoted to the Welsh Adran Premier League, continues to show why women were meant to be footballers. With new players, a new pitch, and a whole new level of competition, can they continue to dominate and make a name for themselves at the top of the League?

Season 3 brings back American star Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Canadian star Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), plus the full team of Wrexham players in both the men's and women's divisions.  McElhenney and Reynolds are executive producers, along with Josh Drisko, Bryan Rowland, Jeff Luini, Humphrey Ker, Nick Frenkel, George Dewey, and Boardwalk Pictures’ Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Sarina Roma, and Andy Thomas.

Welcome to Wrexham Season 3 debuts on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 10 p.m. ET on FX, and streams the next day on Disney+ and Hulu. Season 3 runs eight episodes and will air/stream weekly through the end of June.
