The series also sees the arrival of new recruit Detective Constable George Fancy, played by Lewis Peek, whom Morse has to reluctantly mentor. The new series begins with Morse having finally passed his Sergeant’s exams, as Oxford City Police merges into Thames Valley Constabulary. Joan Thursday (Sara Vickers) has returned to Oxford, but much is unresolved following her disappearance the previous year and Endeavour’s unexpected proposal. For editorial use only.
It’s almost time for a new season of Inspector Morse prequel Endeavour! The long-awaited fifth season of the popular period mystery series kicks off this summer on PBS’ Masterpiece. (Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 24.)
As a result, PBS has released the first trailer for Season 5, to help us all get in the proper Oxford sleuthing mood.
The new season will expand to six feature-length episodes, up from the four that comprised every season prior to this one. They’re entitled “Muse,” “Cartouche,” “Passenger,” “Colours,” ”Quartet” and “Requiem”. Shaun Evans will, of course, be back as the younger version of Endeavour Morse, joined once more by Roger Allam as his trusty partner Fred Thursday.

Endeavour’s fifth season will take place in 1968, a time of revolution in the wider world and one of significant development in the life of Morse himself. This was the period during which the Police Act of 1964 finally went into effect, which combined the longstanding Oxford Police with several other regional forces to create the Thames Valley Constabulary. By the early 1980s, this name changed to the more familiar Thames Valley Police, which longtime Inspector Morse fans will doubtless recognize as the division where Morse worked in the original series.
Endeavour has already been renewed for a sixth season, which will take young Morse into the final year of the 1960s. So we still have quite a bit to look forward to. (With the possibility of more stories to come beyond that.)
