It's been a long and arduous journey for the five-part limited series The Narrow Road to the Deep North, based on Australian writer Richard Flanagan's best-selling novel. Initially announced in 2018, the project was one of the few stuck in multiple-year pandemic-induced delays. Filming did not get off the ground until 2023, and then getting it on air was compounded by the changing streaming landscape as studios pulled back on buying pricey series. However, the homegrown Australian aspect (and the ability to sell a tie-in novel) was good enough for Amazon's down-under Prime Video streaming service to get on board, giving the series the boost it needed.
With Amazon money backing the series, The Narrow Road to the Deep North became the highest-profile TV show at Berlinale 2025 and sold to the BBC in the U.K. and HBO in the States. HBO jumped on it, as the show stars Jacob Elordi and Ciarán Hinds sharing the lead role of Dorrigo Evans and co-stars Odessa Young as love interest Amy Mulvaney. Elordi may have broken out in Saltburn, but his initial fame came as part of the cast of HBO's Euphoria; Young recently co-starred with Colin Firth in The Staircase; and Hinds is currently remembered for his recent turn in Belfast, but before that, he was a high-profile stunt casting in Game of Thrones' third and fourth seasons.
The trailer and release date is for Prime Video's release of the series in Australia, New Zealand, and (slightly randomly) Canada. The BBC and HBO have not announced premiere dates yet, but it's a good bet that Prime has the exclusive on it for at least a few weeks after the finale in June 2025.

The series is a five-part saga charting the life of Dorrigo Evans, including his passionate love affair with Amy Mulvaney, his time held captive in a WW2 POW camp, and his later years as a revered surgeon and reluctant war hero. An intimate character study of a complex man, the epic drama is a compelling portrayal of the courage and cruelty of war and a timeless love story that sustains one through the darkest of times.
Elordi, Hinds, and Young are joined by a roster of high-profile Australian actors, including Heather Mitchell (The Secrets She Keeps), Thomas Weatherall (Royal Flying Doctor Service), Charles An (Last King of the Cross), Olivia DeJonge (Elvis), Shô Kasamatsu (Dear Patient), Taki Abe (The Wolverine), Simon Baker (The Mentalist), and Masa Yamaguchi (The Brighton Miracle).
All five episodes were adapted by writer Shaun Grant from Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name and directed by Justin Kurzel, with Alexandra Taussig producing. Kurzel, Grant, and Flanagan are executive producers alongside Jo Porter & Rachel Gardner for Curio Pictures.
The Narrow Road to the Deep North premieres on Amazon's Prime Video service in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada on Friday, April 18, 2025. The series will follow in the U.K. on the BBC and in the States on HBO and Max, most likely in late summer or early fall for awards traction.
