Nineties icon Alicia Silverstone is coming to Acorn TV this summer. The streamer has announced that its latest cozy crime thriller, Irish Blood, will officially premiere this August.
Best known for her turn as a contemporary Emma Woodhouse in Clueless, Silverstone plays divorce lawyer Fiona Sharpe, whose father, Declan (Jason O'Mara), abandoned her and her mother when she was just a child. Thirty-some years later, an out-of-the-blue message sends her to Ireland in the hopes of solving the mystery of his sudden disappearance. Along the way, Fiona uncovers new truths about her father, his dark past, and meets a family she never knew, all of which reshape her understanding of herself and her history in new and unexpected ways.
Irish Blood is the latest entry in Acorn TV's ever-growing line of cozy crime dramas starring actors looking for a reboot into a different phase of their careers. The best example of this is probably My Life is Murder, the popular series in which former Xena: Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless has been playing a retired detective who helps solve crimes around spending time with her cat for four seasons now. (With a fifth slated for later this year) But Lawless is hardly alone: Former Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman star Jane Seymour has found career rejuvenation playing the titular crime-solving English professor Harry Wild, and former True Blood heartthrob Steven Moyer is busy tracking down prestige art thieves in Art Detectives.
Silverstone's new series is slightly different in that it not only follows an American lead character (albeit one transplanted into the gorgeous Irish countryside), but primarily focuses on a season-long case, rather than the episodic case-of-the-week style the streamer's other hits tend to favor.
Here's the series synopsis.
A six-part murder mystery, Irish Blood focuses on Fiona, whose path in life is earmarked by her father, Declan, who seemingly abandoned her and her mother on her tenth birthday. After years of channeling anger toward him, to the benefit of her litigious clients, a message from her father sends her to Ireland. There she learns key truths about her father as well as a family that doesn’t know she exists, and, moreover, that the story of abandonment that has shaped her entire life – was a lie. A lie intended to protect her and her mother from her father’s shady business dealings. Fiona resolves to uncover the full truth about her father and reconnect with the parent she only thought she knew.
Alongside Silverstone and O'Hara, the series also stars Wendy Crewson (The Nest), Dearbhla Molly (Hullraisers), Simone Kirby (His Dark Materials), Ruth Codd (Small Town, Big Story), and Leonardo Taiwo (Liaison).
“Irish Blood is the story of a woman discovering herself and confronting her past after traveling abroad unexpectedly," Silverstone said in a statement when the series was announced. "I love how unpredictable the storytelling feels and the combination of drama, humor, and suspense my character experiences."
Writers Christina Ray, Aaron Martin, Mike O’Leary, and John Krizanc penned the series, and director Molly McGlynn helmed all six installments. Silverstone is an executive producer alongside Ray, Martin, and McGlynn, as well as Christina Jennings, Scott Garvie, Paul Donovan, and Ailish McElmeel. Paige Haight and Catherine McGee produce. The series is produced by Shaftesbury and Deadpan Pictures, in association with AMC Studios and with the support of incentives for the Irish Film Industry provided by the government of Ireland, the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, and Ontario Creates.
Irish Blood will premiere on Monday, August 11, 2025, exclusively on Acorn TV in the U.S. and Canada, with new episodes releasing weekly thereafter.
