The Bakers Are Ready to Rise in 'The Great British Baking Show's Season 15 Trailer
Last week, Channel 4 revealed that The Great British Baking Show would return in 2024 to the exact spot on the calendar where it always premieres since the pandemic forced it to slide from an end-of-August debut to the end of September. At the time, with the Tuesday premiere confirmed, it seemed safe to presume that the show would head to Netflix that Friday, as it has also done since the pandemic. Netflix politely confirmed that news over the weekend with a new trailer, this time not animated, introducing the Season 15 crop of bakers.
Love Production's biggest show also confirmed that the premiere episode would continue with the usual order of challenges, with Cake Week as the first task faced by the bakers. The first three episodes have been "Cake," "Biscuits," and "Bread," in that order, since 2019. (Cake-Biscuits-Bread has led off the competition nearly every season since moving to Channel 4, save for Season 9.)
This season's premiere will call back to Season 8, with the challenge for the week including Illusion Cakes, a semi-disaster when it was set as the first Showstopper Challenge in 2017. Much like the 2017 episode, The Great British Baking Show is attempting to be topical with their illusion cake challenge, in this case, trying to make our bakers question whether or not their creation is cake. Not exactly a hard question, considering we will watch the contestants bake them. We'll have to see how they do when the show arrives on Channel 4 in the U.K. and Netflix in the U.S.
As a reminder, here is the 2024 contestant lineup, which includes the series' first American ex-pat, in order from youngest to oldest:
- Sumayah: 19-year-old Dentistry Student from Lancashire
- Dylan: 20-year-old Temp from Buckinghamshire
- Mike: 29-year-old Farm Manager from Wiltshire
- Illiyin: 31-year-old Birth Trauma Specialist/Midwife from Norfolk
- Christiaan: 33-year-old Menswear Designer from The Netherlands
- Georgie: 34-year-old Paediatric Nurse from Carmarthenshire
- John: 37-year-old Directorate Support Manager from West Midlands
- Nelly: 44-year-old Palliative Care Assistant from Slovakia
- Andy: 44-year-old Car Mechanic from Essex
- Gill: 53-year-old Senior Category Manager from Lancashire
- Jeff: 67-year-old Pensioner from New York(!!!)
- Hazel: 71-year-old Pensioner from Kent
As always, Judge Paul Hollywood will bully everyone into letting him have his way, while Prue Leith will be the judge who acquiesces. Alison Hammond returns as host with Noel Fielding, bringing what sanity they can to the proceedings.
The Great British Baking Show Season 15 (which Netflix still pretends we all call "Collection 12") debuts on Tuesday, September 24, at 9 p.m. BT on Channel 4 and will follow on Netflix in the States on Friday, September 27, 2024. The series will stream weekly, with new episodes landing in the U.K. on Tuesdays and the U.S. on Fridays through Thanksgiving.
