If anything's a sure thing in the world of entertainment nowadays, it's murder. With procedurals of every stripe popping up everywhere, there's something for every kind of viewer, whether your taste runs to grisly true crime or more cozy series in idyllic locations where dead bodies happen to pop up. But the sheer volume of new releases means that only the best of them have genuine staying power. Masterpiece drama Grantchester is set to kick off its 10th season on PBS this summer, and it certainly seems as though this little mystery series that could still has plenty of stories to tell.
The secret to Grantchester's success lies in the broad appeal of its identity. Unlike many mystery dramas named after a singular detective at their center, this series is focused on the community its rotating cast of characters inhabit. Yes, the show ostensibly revolves around the odd couple-style central relationship of a somewhat jaded police detective and the local vicar who helps him solve crimes, but as the series is currently on its third major cast change, the drama has more than proven that its primary concept is strong enough to stand the test of time.
Season 9 saw Rishi Nair (The Marlow Murder Club) cast as the series' designated Hot Vicar, following in the footsteps of James Norton (Playing Nice) and Tom Brittney (Back in Action). His Rev. Alphy Kottaram definitely took a minute to warm up to his sometimes-partner DCI Geordie Keating (Robson Green) and the other residents of Grantchester, which means that viewers didn't really get to know him as deeply as they did his predecessors. But if the trailer is anything to go by, that seems to be an issue the show is out to correct, as the secrets of Alphy's past and family look to be major subplots.
Here's the official synopsis.
In Grantchester Season 10, as DI Geordie Keating and Reverend Alphy Kottaram continue to work together as a crime-solving duo in scenic Grantchester, they must also support each other through changing times, family struggles, and personal secrets. This season, Alphy feels like he’s found a home, but he’s forced to confront secrets he’s kept close to his chest. Will he be able to let anyone fully in, or must he confront truths about himself first?
Alongside Nair and Green, other returning cast members include Al Weaver (Press) as Leonard Finch, Tessa Peake-Jones (The Feud) as Mrs. C, Kacey Ainsworth (Whitstable Pearl) as Cathy Keating, Oliver Dimsdale (Hotel Portofino) as Daniel Marlowe, Nick Brimble (The Halcyon) as Jack Chapman, Bradley Hall (Dalgliesh) as DC Larry Peters, and Melissa Johns (Adolescence) as Miss Scott.
Grantchester is a co-production of Kudos (a Banijay UK Company) and Masterpiece for ITV. Series creator Daisy Coulam was the lead writer on Season 10, with directors Katherine Churcher and Rob Evans helming episodes.
