Apple TV+'s exuberant, chaotic period drama The Buccaneers is set to return for its second season next month, and if the trailer is anything to go by, both the titular girl gang of besties and the audience watching at home are in for a wild ride. The story, which follows a squad of American heiresses who arrive in England seeking rich husbands, isn't your mother's Edith Wharton adaptation. But that's what makes it fun.
Season 1 ended suitably dramatically, with Nan choosing to marry Theo, Duke of Tintagel, despite having feelings for his best friend, Guy, to help her pregnant sister, Jinny, flee the country and escape her abusive spouse. Elsewhere, Conchita's family has lost all their money, her husband Richard's dad is dying, and Mabel has broken off her engagement to Miles and come out to her sister, Lizzy, and confessed her romantic feelings to Honoria.
There's clearly a lot of heavy stuff coming our girls' way in the series' second season, and the trailer wastes no time jumping right in. Set to the (absolutely perfect) soundtrack of Chappell Roan's "Good Luck, Babe!", the trailer shows us a Nan wrestling with her choices, vowing to make her new life work and leave Guy behind, as shots of various lush landscapes, lavish parties, and what appears to be LIzzy's wedding (!?) unspool in rapid-fire order. Lord Seadown threatens Nan! Mabel and Honoria look happy! Everyone's dressed like fairies!
In short, it's pretty much exactly what you expect (and want) a new series of The Buccaneers to be. And, of course, there's that closing shot, which features guest star Leighton Meester, and the huge hint that she's so obviously playing Nan's biological mother, which is somehow still a fact that no one involved on this show will confirm!
Here's the Season 2 description.
In the first season of The Buccaneers, a group of fun-loving young American girls exploded into the tightly corseted London of the 1870s…setting hearts racing and kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash. Now the Buccaneers are no longer the invaders - England is their home. In fact they’re practically running the place.
Nan is the Duchess of Tintagel, the most influential woman in the country. Conchita is Lady Brightlingsea, heroine to a wave of young American heiresses. And Jinny is on every front-page, wanted for the kidnap of her unborn child. All of the girls have been forced to grow up and now have to fight to be heard, as they wrestle with romance, lust, jealousy, births and deaths... themes consuming all women of any age, no matter what year it is. Last time we got a taste of England. This time we’re in for a veritable feast.
Season 2 reunites the Buccaneers — Kristine Frøseth (The First Lady) as Nan St. George, Imogen Waterhouse (The Irregulars) as Jinny St. George, Alisha Boe (Ray Donovan) as Conchita Closson, Aubri Ibrag (Dive Club) as Lizzy Elmsworth, and Josie Totah (Champions) as Mabel Elmsworth. The series also co-stars Christina Hendricks (Small Town, Big Story) as Mrs. St. George, with Mia Threapleton (Dangerous Liaisons) as Honoria Marable.
Other returning members of the ensemble cast include Josh Dylan (Masters of the Air) as Lord Richard Marable, Barney Fishwick (Showtrial) as Lord James Seadown, Guy Remmers (Lessons) as Theo, Duke of Tintagel, and Matthew Broome (My Fault: London) as Guy Thwarte. New faces in Season 2 include Jacob Ifan (Rogue Heroes) as Hector Robinson, Grace Ambrose (Paradise) as Paloma Ballardino, Maria Almeida (Fifteen-Love) as Cora Merrigan, and Greg Wise (The Crown) as Reede Robinson.
Series creator Katherine Jakeways penned all eight episodes of the show's second season; directors William McGregor, Rachel Leiterman, John Hardwick, and Charlie Manton split helming duties. Jakeways is also an executive producer alongside Beth Willis (Doctor Who) and Susanna White (Bleak House).
The Buccaneers Season 2 will debut its premiere episode on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, June 18, with a new episode to follow each week through August 6, 2025. Season 1 is currently streaming.
