In an entertainment landscape where television renewals feel like riskier propositions than ever — just think about how many of your faves have been unceremoniously canceled after a mere season or two — it's fairly big news when a series manages to outrun its expectations. Such is the case with British comedy Trying, a charming, largely under-the-radar property has just landed a fifth season renewal at Apple TV+. (Five seasons shouldn't feel like such an achievement, and yet these days, it definitely does.)
The heartwarming series premiered in early 2020 and is one of the streamer's longest-running properties, though its initial launch was rather overshadowed by the arrival of AppleTV+'s other popular British series, Ted Lasso, just a few short months later. But Trying has just kept right on trucking, steadily deepening the relationships between its central characters, complicating their growing family bond, and exploring the challenges of parenthood.
The series follows the story of Nikki and Jason, a couple who were struggling to conceive a child when the show first premiered, before ultimately (and after much consideration) deciding that adoption was the right path for their family. In its third season finale, the pair formally adopted Princess and her younger brother, Tyler. Season 4 flawlessly pulled off a multi-year time jump, rejoining its characters when their adopted children are teenagers, and most curious about the identities of their birth parents and the reasons they were given up.
The forthcoming Season 5 is set to deal with what happens in the wake of the sudden reappearance of Princess and Tyler's birth mother, Kat, and what her presence (particularly after such a long absence) means for the family they've made together.
Here's the Season 5 description.
Season five finds Nikki and Jason dealing with the consequences of Princess and Tyler’s biological mother Kat turning up at their doorstep, and the whirlwind of chaos she brings into their settled family life.
Trying stars Esther Smith (Cuckoo) and Rafe Spall (The Salisbury Poisonings) alongside an ensemble cast that includes Darren Boyd (The Outlaws) as Scott, Sian Brooke (Supacell) as Karen, Scarlett Rayner as Princess, and Cooper Turner as Tyler. Charlotte Riley (A Christmas Carol) plays Princess and Turner's biological mother, Kat.
The series is created, written, and executive produced by Andy Wolton. It is produced by BBC Studios, and executive producers include BAFTA Award nominees Josh Cole and Sam Pinnell alongside Chris Sussman.
There is no word yet on when Season 5 will hit our screens. Trying Seasons 1-4 are currently streaming on Apple TV+.
