ITV recently confirmed that filming for Trigger Point Season 3 had commenced in the U.K., an unsurprising development considering the show's viewership numbers in the U.K. made Season 2 the second-most-watched drama series on ITVX. However, for those who have been keeping their ears to the ground for signs of the long-awaited commission for Season 7 of Line of Duty, it was less joyful news, as it confirmed once more that the lead cast members have firmly moved on. At least, they have for 2025, if one cast member is to be believed, but 2026 may be a whole different kettle of fish.

Now, I want to be clear for American readers that Line of Duty Season 7 rumors have regularly surfaced like clockwork in the British Entertainment ecosystem ever since Seasons 5 and 6 were commissioned in the pre-pandemic times of 2017. Most were nothing more than wild speculation or (my personal favorite) "unnamed sources" floating trial balloons of one kind or another, hoping to manifest the series by sheer force of will. However, in mid-2024, the first credible rumor surfaced suggesting series creator Jed Mercurio was finally serious about getting the band back together.

Considering his trio of leads had scattered to the winds, with Adrian Dunbar starring in Ridley, Martin Compston in mid-production for the thriller Fear, and Vicky McClure gearing up for a greenlit Season 3, it seemed as if Mercurio was ready to go back but lining up schedules for the cast was a significant hurdle. That seems to have been confirmed by Line of Duty supporting actor Christina Chong, who played DI Nicola Rogerson in Season 2 and then again in Season 6. In a recent interview, she admitted potential returnees being asked about their filming availability for the end of 2025/early 2026. "So I have been asked about a season, is it seven? Yeah. Potentially, Nicola Rogerson will be back for Season 7."

So if the rumors are true, Line of Duty is potentially coming back for 2026, or at least hopefully filming by then. However, many pieces still have to fall into place before anything gets off the ground. Until that happens, we'll have to content ourselves with Trigger Point Season 3. Here's the synopsis:

The third series and working sees Lana Washington and her team investigate a bomb threat that soon reveals itself to be the start of a sinister vendetta: someone is targeting individuals and demanding revenge. Working alongside the Police Counterterrorism Unit, the Bomb Disposal Squad races against time to find the bomber before they claim their next victim.

McClure will once again be joined by the two actors remaining from Season 1's original cast, Eric Shango (Suspicion) as Danny, Nabil Elouahabi (Unforgotten) as Hassan "Hass" Rahim. They'll be joined by the two main survivors from Season 2: Natalie Simpson (Outlander) as DSupt. Marianne Hamilton and Maanuv Thiara (D.I. Ray) as DI Amar Batra. The only addition for Season 3 announced thus far is guest star Jason Flemyng (Prime Target).

Chris Brandon (Bloodlands) takes over as lead writer with Season 3 from original writer Daniel Brierley and Season 2's Simon Ashdown. Season 2 director Audrey Cooke returns for the new seasons and splits helming duties with Jamie Donoghue (A Discovery of Witches); the series producer is Kristian Dench. Brandon and McClure executive produce alongside Jed Mercurio, Daniel Walker, and Jessica Sharkey.

Trigger Point Season 3 is expected to debut on the BBC before the end of 2025 and will follow on BritBox in due course. Whether or not it's followed by Trigger Point Season 4 or Line of Duty Season 7 remains to be seen.
