The trailer for the upcoming AMC+ limited series The North Water is here and it promises a dark story about the brutality of humanity set against a stunning frozen Arctic wasteland.

Full of blood, snow, and ominous music, the setting immediately calls to mind AMC's 2018 period series The Terror, which explored a more supernatural explanation for the horrors awaiting those who explored the icy north. (Though that story also featured its fair share of terrible people, as well - even if this one does look as though it will have a lot more blatant whale murder.)

The four-part The North Water, which will air on BBC Two in the U.K. later this Fall following its American streaming debut, is based on Ian McGuire's bestselling 2016 novel of the same name. Set in Hull, England, and on the ice floes of the Arctic in the late 1850s, the story follows Patrick Sumner (Jack O'Connell), a disgraced ex-army surgeon who joins a whaling expedition to the Arctic with the brutal harpooner Henry Drax (Farrell).

Now the ship's doctor, Sumner must confront the brutality of his new crewmates, who in many cases are as dangerous as any of the elements they face on their journey. As the true purpose of the expedition becomes clear, a confrontation between the two men erupts, taking them on a journey far from solid ground and way beyond the safe moorings of civilization.

Though the trailer is not clear about precisely what sort of brutal conditions the men of this story will face, it certainly seems to imply that the humans around them could potentially pose a more deadly threat. (Someone's definitely getting murdered, is what I'm saying.)

The show was filmed in the real-life Arctic, with the production team sailing as far as 81 degrees north to capture sequences in the pack ice. This is believed to be the furthest point north a drama series has ever filmed, so when you're marveling at how cold everyone looks, just remember that they came by that expression honestly.

The North Water will have its world premiere on the cable network's AMC+ streaming service beginning on July 15.

Will you be giving this new Arctic dramatic thriller a look? Let's discuss in the comments.
