Mark your calendars: Period drama A Suitable Boy will officially come to America this December via streaming service Acorn TV.

The series, based on the classic novel of the same name by Vikram Seth, was adapted for television by Andrew Davies of Sanditon and War and Peace fame. (Though Seth himself served as an executive producer.)

An epic tale of life and love set in post-Partition 1950s India, A Suitable Boy follows the story of Lata Mira, a young university student who is coming of age just as her country is carving out its own identity as a nation and preparing to go to the polls for its first democratic general election.  Lata's overbearing mother is hell-bent on finding her a suitable husband but in a world full of daring new ideas, she's determined to decide her own future.

The series is directed by Academy Award-nominated film director Mira Nair (Monsoon WeddingThe Namesake) in her television series debut, and features an all-star cast of Indian talent, including Indian screen legend Tabu (The Namesake, Life of Pi, Andhadhun) and Bollywood leading man Ishaan Khatter (Beyond the Clouds, Dhadak). Rising star Tanya Maniktala plays Lata.

A Suitable Boy aired in the U.K. earlier this summer on BBC One and generally received positive reviews, particularly for its all-Indian cast, which is both a first and an important victory when it comes to representation on U.K. television. You can watch the BBC trailer for the series below.

"A Suitable Boy is one of the most sought-after period dramas in recent years, so Acorn TV is thrilled to partner with BBC Studios to bring Mira Nair's sumptuous, gorgeously-filmed period drama to U.S. audiences," Don Klees, SVP Programming, Acorn TV,  said in a statement. "With acclaimed screenwriter Andrew Davies adapting the landmark novel, beautiful locations, and an incredible cast, the six-part series is the latest example of the high-quality period dramas that Britain has excelled at for decades and that U.S. and Canadian audiences are sure to love."

Mark your calendars: A Suitable Boy will be available to stream on Acorn TV in the U.S. and Canada beginning Monday, December 7.

Lacy's love of British TV is embarrassingly extensive, but primarily centers around evangelizing all things Doctor Who, and watching as many period dramas as possible.

Digital media type by day, she also has a fairly useless degree in British medieval literature, and dearly loves to talk about dream poetry, liminality, and the medieval religious vision. (Sadly, that opportunity presents itself very infrequently.) York apologist, Ninth Doctor enthusiast, and unabashed Ravenclaw. Say hi on Threads or Blue Sky at @LacyMB.
