Get ready to return to Great Slaughter --- production on Season 4 of Sister Boniface Mysteries is officially underway.

The popular period-set mystery follows the adventures of Lorna Watson's eponymous Sister Boniface, a character who got her start on the long-running series Father Brown. She's a Vespa-riding Catholic nun who uses her fully stocked crime lab and love of detective fiction to moonlight as a forensic scientist in her spare time. (Because as we all know, in the world of British television, literally anyone can solve crimes.)

“It’s brilliant to be back with the gang for series four," Watson said in a statement. "I feel very lucky to be part of such a lovely show and can’t wait to get cracking, solving crime in the Cotswolds sunshine.”

BritBox and the BBC also announced that the show will once again air a feature-length festive special this Christmas, which will serve as the kick off the fourth season to follow next year. The holiday installment will follow the joy and tribulations of the Great Slaughter Amateur Dramatics Society's annual pantomime.

Silly theatricals largely aimed at children with topical jokes, slapstick comedy, and occasionally bawdy humor for the grown-ups thrown in, pantomimes are a Christmas tradition around the U.K. The GSADS will attempt to put on Cinderella, complete with a celebrity director, and the pressure's on for the group to deliver their best performance yet. But when cast members start dropping like flies, Sister Boniface will have to catch a killer before they can ruin the show --- and rob everyone of the chance to see a pantomime horse dance a polka.

Beyond the Christmas special, Season 4 will include everything from a bucking bronco that goes haywire on the set of a game show to a killer scarecrow that stalks the streets of Great Slaughter, and CC Lowsley's (Robert Dawes) decision to engage in something called "team building".

“I’m thrilled that TV’s favorite forensic nun is returning for a fourth series," Neil Irvine, Executive Producer at BBC Studios said in a statement. "The alchemy created by Jude, Lorna, and our wonderful cast and Midlands crew continues to delight viewers worldwide. This series sees a serial killer on the loose at the Christmas Pantomime and a threat to the convent itself. I can’t wait for the audience to find out if this is the end for St Vincent’s...”

Alongside Watson, the returning series cast also includes Max Brown (The Tudors) as DI Sam Gillespie, Jerry Iwu (Sex Education) as DS Felix Livingstone, Ami Metcalf (Nan) as WPC Peggy Button, and Carolyn Pickles (Broadchurch) as Rev Mother Adrian. The Season 4 guest cast includes Les Dennis (Coronation Street), Katherine Kingsley (The Larkins), Martyn Ellis (Renegade Nell), Mina Anwar (The Sarah Jane Adventures), Ed Birch (The Witcher) and Daniel Laurie (Call the Midwife).

"Sister Boniface Mysteries is a BritBox staple, and we look forward to sharing a new season of crimes, capers, and Sixties shenanigans with our eager audience.” Robert Schildhouse, President BritBox North America & General Manager BritBox International added.

Filming is taking place in and around the Cotswolds. Season 4 of Sister Boniface Mysteries is expected to air next year.
