The good Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson) is returning to BritBox for Season 3 of Sister Boniface Mysteries after her surprise turn on Father Brown Season 11 earlier in 2024. The nun-led spin-off of the long-running adaptation of G. K. Chesterton's short stories starring Mark Williams was an instant hit when BritBox introduced the series as its first major original spin-off in 2022. However, at the time, Father Brown had not created an episode featuring Watson as Sister Boniface since her original one-off appearance in 2013; there was no test "backdoor pilot," as they are known in the industry, where a side character is given a temporary lead in the parent series and the blessing to go off and run their own show.

It took Sister Boniface running for two full seasons and gaining a significant fandom before Father Brown accepted she was here to stay and begrudgingly did a backdoor pilot as part of Season 11, ahead of the Sister Boniface Mysteries' third season and after its first successful Christmas-time themed Festive Special. But no matter. Better late than never, as we say around here. Now that the vespa-riding nun has her blessing, in an episode one should note, backdated to be appropriately timed in the Father Brown universe that it happens pre-Sister Boniface Season 1, fans can look to the future, where Season 3 is setting up to bring some very promising mysteries and a whole lot of murder.

But they don't call this town Great Slaughter for nothing. Check out the first look photos from the new season, which include quite a few fun ways to die. Can you spot them all?

Here's the synopsis for the show's forthcoming third season:

In Season 3, a famous organist is murdered mid-tune in the chapel, Great Slaughter’s first sci-fi convention results in a mysterious kidnapping, and a ‘dead cert’ at the screen tests for the new ‘Agent Best’ ends up, well… dead.  To top it all, Felix has a challenge of his own when his fiancée Victoria arrives from Bermuda with an ultimatum that could change everything…
