Ask anyone who works at Paramount or Skydance how the merger is going — it was initially supposed to close by the end of June 2025 — and they'll tell you everything is fine, on track, and nothing to worry about. (We're all fine here; how are you?) Ask anyone else in the business, and they'll gently tell you that, with less than two weeks to go, there's no way the merger will close by the end of June. More importantly, if the administration does not let it proceed by October, all parties will almost certainly walk away, which most industry watchers assume will spell the end for the storied production studio.
That reality makes anything greenlit by Paramount for 2026 suspect, including its newly announced series, The Revenge Club.
Paramount knows it is operating on borrowed time, and that may have prompted the company to cast the series and announce its working partners as soon as possible. The Revenge Club (which we should note is currently a working title, not the official one) is adapted from the upcoming novel The Othello Club by J.D. Pennington. Don't worry if you've never heard of him; up until this year, he was an ad exec who wrote copy for network campaigns. The Othello Club, which does not arrive on shelves until November 2025, is his debut novel.
In most cases, Paramount's announcement would have come closer to the book's publication, if not in the days after its release. (It helps for the author to have something published before telling viewers you're adapting their work.) However, considering that Paramount may not exist by then, one can understand the rush to get filming underway.
Here's the series' synopsis:
Based on the upcoming debut novel The Othello Club by J.D. Pennington, the series follows six strangers brought together by a divorce support group who quickly transform from therapy-seeking victims into architects of retribution. With little in common beyond their pain, they form an unlikely bond. What begins as a cathartic outlet quickly spirals into something far more dangerous.
Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Slow Horses) and Martin Compston (Line of Duty) lead the cast as two of the club's ensemble, as Emily and Calum, respectively. They are joined by Meera Syal (Mrs. Sidhu Investigates) as Rita, Sharon Rooney (Barbie) as Rachel, Douglas Henshall (Shetland) as Steve, Chaneil Kular (Sex Education) as Tej, and Amit Shah (Mr Bates vs. The Post Office) as Malcolm. Supporting cast includes Aoife Kennan (Vera) and Rob Malone (The Witcher) as Rosa and Leon – the two police officers investigating the murders – along with Niamh Walsh (Jamestown), Wil Coban (The Sandman), Christina Bennington (Midsomer Murders), and Eoin Duffy (The Dry).
Series creator Gabbie Asher (The Tattooist of Auschwitz) leads a team that includes writers Matt Jones (The Split) and Adam Usden (Lupin) penning episodes and Tim Kirkby (Fleabag) as lead director, splitting helming duties with Daniel O’Hara (Stay Close); Margot Gavan Duffy serves as the producer. Asher also serves as executive producer alongside author J.D. Pennington, plus Alison Jackson & Jess Connell for the UK division of Gaumont.
Filming for The Revenge Club is expected to begin in the latter half of 2025. As for where the show will actually air, that remains to be seen.
