Prime Video's 'Lazarus' Filming Underway in Liverpool
Success begets success, and the Harlan Coben adaptations at Netflix have been freakishly successful. Coben’s novels, thrillers initially set in America but which Netflix smartly recentered in the U.K. and various European countries, have become one of the streamer’s most dependable hits that the streamer makes on a modest budget and keeps Richard Armitage gainfully employed. In Hollywood, there is no more significant sign of success than having another company imitate you, and Netflix can now point to Amazon’s Prime Video as having done so, with the moneyed streamer paying Coben to write them a totally brand new story to make into a TV series, called Lazarus, filming for which is currently underway in Liverpool.
There will be one significant difference between the Prime Video Harlan Coben thriller and all the English-language ones over at Netflix: Lazarus will not include Richard Armitage in any capacity. (At least if it doesn’t, Amazon Studios is keeping it well under wraps.) Instead, the new series will reteam Sam Claflin and Bill Nighy, who last worked together in the 2016 British war comedy-drama film Their Finest. The two play a father-son team, with Claflin as Laz, a well-respected forensic psychologist who has spent his whole life running from the pain of his past, and Nighy as Doctor Lazarus, aka Dr L, psychologist and father to Laz, Jenna, and the late Sutton. A beloved figure within his community, he shares his son’s charm, dry humor, and charisma.
The two are joined by Alexandra Roach, who British fans will recognize from Killing Eve, as Jenna. Since her sister Sutton’s murder, Jenna has buried herself in a world of spiritual practice, but now, when her brother returns home and starts experiencing unexplained phenomena, she is forced to confront secrets from her own past.
Here's the synopsis:
Lazarus follows a man who returns home after his father's suicide and begins to have disturbing experiences that can't be explained. He quickly becomes entangled in a series of cold-case murders as he grapples with the mystery of his father's death and his sister's murder 25 years ago.
No cast has been revealed beyond Claflin, Nighy, and Roach, but are expected to be announced in due course.
Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst, who wrote the screenplays for Netflix's adaptations of Coban's novels Fool Me Once and Stay Close, will serve as writers on the series. Director Wayne Che Yip will helm the first two episodes, with Matt Strevens producing. Coben, Brocklehurst, Yip and Claflin all executive produce alongside Nicola Shindler and Richard Fee for Quay Street Productions.
Lazarus is currently filming and is expected to be released in early 2025 on Prime Video.
