Orphan Black: Echoes, the highly anticipated spin-off of BBC America's accidental hit Orphan Black, has finally released the official trailer after months and months of speculation. However, despite what should be an obvious premise that star Krysten Ritter is the new clone, all this has happened before, and all this will happen again, etc (to borrow a phrase from another beloved sci-fi show) — the trailer doesn't really answer any questions or really set up much for fans to go on, other than, of course that a conspiracy is afoot and it will go all the way to the top, come all the way back down to the bottom, and probably reach the sides at a push.

Screenwriter Graeme Manson originally created the initial Orphan Black series, which debuted on BBC America in 2013. A Canadian production, it was a bit of a stretch for the network, which was trying its best to stick to British shows in its original programming. The show wasn't marketed much at the time, with the assumption audiences would prefer Ripper Street, which debuted around the same time and starred Jerome Flynn, then at the peak of his American fame due to Game of Thrones. However, Ripper Street flopped, and audiences began turning to Orphan Black just as it reached its third episode, and the word clone was first introduced.

Of course, Echoes won't be so lucky; it will have to introduce its clones from the start, and neither BBC America nor AMC will have time to let the show find its way and the audience find their way if the series doesn't take off right away. But luckily, Clone Club is ready and waiting. Send in the Clones.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in the near future, Orphan Black: Echoes takes a deep dive into the exploration of the scientific manipulation of human existence. It follows a group of women as they weave their way into each other's lives and embark on a thrilling journey, unraveling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a wrenching story of love and betrayal.

Ritter plays Lucy, a woman with an unimaginable origin story, trying to find her place in the world. The series also stars Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard), Amanda Fix (North of Normal), Avan Jogia (Now Apocalypse), Rya Kihlstedt (A Teacher), and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry).

The series was created by Anna Fishko (Pieces of Her), who also acts as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, with John Fawcett, the co-creator of the original series. David Fortier and Ivan Schneeberg, executive producers from Boat Rocker on the original Orphan Black series, return as executive producers on the new series. Boat Rocker’s Nick Nantell is also an executive producer, in addition to Katie O’Connell Marsh and Kerry Appleyard

Orphan Black: Echoes premieres on Sunday, June 23, 2024, on AMC+ and on linear at 10 p.m. ET on BBC America and AMC. New episodes will air weekly on Sundays through August.
