Nicole Kidman and Liane Moriarty have been partners since 2016, when Kidman's Blossom Films teamed up with Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine to produce an adaptation of Moriarty's best-selling Big Little Lies for HBO. Kidman and Witherspoon's push to create TV series that star women over 40 with juicy roles for themselves was a radical move in Hollywood, helping to change the entertainment landscape. Witherspoon had a few not-nearly as successful series before Witherspoon sold it off, but Kidman has stayed steadfast with Blossom, adapting Moriaty's The Last Anniversary and Nine Perfect Strangers, the latter of which will debut Season 2 on Hulu in May.

Kidman has stated in interviews that her goal in continuing with Blossom is to create enough projects to be able to hire as many older actors as she can, stepping aside and staying behind the camera (as she did with The Last Anniversary) so others can have a go. However, for Nine Perfect Strangers, she took the juiciest role for herself: guru Masha Dmitrichenko. Season 1 had her as the head of Tranquillum House, where she gathered nine people to attend her wellness retreat, with a determination to give them emotional breakthroughs, whether they wanted one or not.

Season 1 also was primarily an American and Australian cast, most of whose stories were close-ended. So when the series was commissioned for Season 2, Kidman decided not to attempt to continue their stories. Instead, she and Moriarty created an anthology series, developing a new story, a new wellness retreat, nine new clients, and Masha going full ice queen in the Australian Alps.

Here's the Season 2 synopsis:

Nine new strangers connected in ways they could never imagine are invited by mysterious guru Masha Dmitrichenko to join a transformational wellness retreat in the Austrian Alps. Over the course of a week, she takes them to the brink. Will they make it? Will she? Masha is willing to try anything in the interest of healing everyone involved, including herself.

Kidman will be joined by an international cast which includes British actors Maisie Richardson-Sellers (Wolf Hall), Mark Strong (Black Bag), Henry Golding (Persuasion); Australian actors Lucas Englander (Catherine the Great), Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus); Swedish actor Lena Olin (One Life); Filipino actor Dolly de Leon (Dirty Linen); Turkish actor Aras Aydin (Aldatmak), and American actors Christine Baranski (The Gilded Age), Annie Murphy (Schitt's Creek), and musician King Princess in her first on-screen role.

Nine Perfect Strangers was initially adapted for the small screen by David E. Kelley, who also penned all eight episodes of Season 2 with JH Butterworth and Sarah Sutherland. Director Jonathan Levine returns to helm the series, with Anthony Byrne also helming installments. The series is executive produced by Kelley, Kidman, Levine, Butterworth, Byrne, and Moriarty, plus Per Saari, Bruna Papandrea, Steve Hutensky, Molly Allen, Rachel Shukert, and Matthew Tinker.

Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2 debuts on Hulu (and under the Hulu tile on Disney+) with two episodes starting Wednesday, May 21, 2025, and streaming with one episode a week through the end of June.
