Good news: UK network ITV officially gave mystery series Grantchester the green light for a third season last week!

The drama stars James Norton as Sidney Chambers, a local clergyman who also solves crimes in his spare time with the help of his occasionally irascible partner, Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (played by Robson Greene).

Grantchester is based on the series of books by James Runcie, and although no plot details have been announced for Season 3 as yet, it seems safe to assume the show will likely take at least some part of its story from the preexisting novels. Season 2 was based on the second Grantchester Mystery novel, Sidney Chambers and the Perils of the Night. Ostensibly, this means that the show’s third season will map to the third novel, Sidney Chambers and the Problem of Evil, but there’s been exactly zero confirmation of that yet. Take it with a boulder of salt.

Season 2 is currently still airing here in the States on PBS’ Masterpiece, but the drama’s sophomore outing just concluded in the UK, which explains the timing of the renewal announcement.  According to the ITV press release, Grantchester was pulling in a consolidated 6.6 million viewers and a 26% share every week, so our favorite little crimefighting vicar that could seems to be doing quite well for himself in that regard.

Season 3 is currently predicted to air at some point in 2017.

Thoughts? Are you excited at the prospect of more Grantchester
