'The Missing' Spin-Off 'Baptiste' Will Come to Masterpiece in April
Mark your calendars, The Missing fans. Spin-off series Baptiste is officially headed to Masterpiece this spring.
The six-part series will feature Turkish-born French actor Tchéky Karyo reprising his role as as the insightful and stubborn French detective Julien Baptiste in a story that takes place two years after the events of The Missing Season 2. Turns out that Baptiste's whole brain surgery situation turned out fine, apparently, and that's probably the only detail you need to know from the original series in order to enjoy this sequel of sorts.
Baptiste will officially premiere on PBS' Materpiece beginning Sunday, April 12, at 10 pm ET and run through May 17.
As the series begins, a retired and restless Baptiste is visiting Amsterdam where his daughter has recently given birth. A lunch with old flame Martha Horchner, now Amsterdam’s chief of police, turns out to be more than a catch-up on old times: she wants his help finding Natalie, a missing girl who is the niece of Englishman Edward Stratton. Martha believes the case is connected to a Romanian sex trafficking gang and that it is vital to find Natalie soon.
Julien meets up with Edward and they begin their search, but it’s not long before Julien realizes that all is not as it seems. Why does nobody want to talk about the missing girl? Who is the man following Julien’s wife? What is the connection between the case and the transsexual brothel, whose owner has sent someone to follow them? And who is the mysterious woman who helps the sex industry girls and tells them that Natalie has run away to Germany? As Julien starts to uncover some of the truths behind the lies, he realizes there is more to this case than meets the eye. But by the time Baptiste becomes aware of the danger that he’s been drawn into, his own family is in grave peril.
The Night Manager's Tom Hollander plays Edward Stratton, with Home Fires' Clare Calbraith as his ex-wife. AndCall the Midwife star Jessica Raine is slated to show up in the series' third episode.
