'The Marlow Murder Club' Finds Another Body & Shakes Up the Trio
The clock is ticking after last week's bombshell on The Marlow Murder Club. The first order of business: Tanika officially hires Judith, Becks, and Suzie as consultants on the case after they prove the religious link between the two previous murders and predict that a third murder is coming. The other officers aren't stoked about the Marlow Murder Club joining the investigation, but they waste no time in using their new access to the case files to put even more clues together.
They are initially led to the Marlow Rowing Club owner, Liz Curtis (Phillipa Peak), who lies to them about knowing Stefan and Iqbal. Her husband, not knowing he's selling his wife out, reveals that Liz and Stefan were good friends and that she used Iqbal's taxi service shortly before he died. When the club goes to Iqbal's to confirm the connection, they discover the identity of Giles Bishop (Mark Fleischmann), a solicitor the club believes finagled Iqbal out of an inheritance he was told he was getting from his deceased neighbor. When Judith and the gals meet Giles, he's cagey, increasing their suspicions. Judith then sneakily watches him rush to his office and shred documents.
Our sleuthing trio takes their investigation to the next level, using costumes and bread to lure Giles out of his office. Becks pretends to have an appointment at the office and stuffs bread into the toaster, setting off the office fire alarm. While the building is evacuated, Suzie climbs into Giles' office through the window and steals the shredded documents from his trash. Becks distracts Giles while Suzie climbs back out, and the Murder Club celebrates on their way to glue the paper back together.
Meanwhile, Tanika's actual team proves somewhat helpful. They dig up Iqbal's taxi routes after he picked up Liz Curtis and discover that he drove her to Chris Bott's house, making her the primary suspect. She could have stolen the murder weapon from Chris Bott's home, killed Stefan Dunwood,y and then killed Iqbal because he's the only one who could connect her to Chris Bott. The police could also match Liz Curtis' fingerprints to the notebook that Judith found at the Dunwoody house.
The police rush to bring Liz in for questioning but instead find her dead with the third medallion — charity — stuffed in her mouth. She's the third victim, not the killer.
While Suzie and Becks debate who on their suspect list could have done it, Judith goes straight to Elliot Howard (Daniel Lapaine). She still believes he's responsible for all of this, but yet again, he has an airtight alibi. The audience knows that Elliot was a member of the Free Masons, whose motto is the same Bible verse Judith quoted when explaining there would be a third murder. After Judith leaves the auction house, Elliot takes a call and tells the person on the other line that they need to meet.
We don't know how Elliot is involved in these murders yet, but we're with Judith that he's not innocent. Now that the third murder has taken place, it's unclear whether the killer has plans for more and how they will all be connected.
Judith and Suzie are fully committed to solving this crime, no matter what it takes. But Becks is starting to get cold feet. She's uncomfortable with the boundaries they are crossing and the potential danger they put themselves in by getting too close to the truth. Still, the shredded remains of whatever Giles Bishop was trying to hide are at Judith's place. The trio needs to put that together and put together the potential connection between Giles and Elliot, or whoever the real killer is.
There's one episode left to go in Season 1, and multiple suspects still need to be fully investigated. As good as the Marlow Murder Club is, Tanika needs to solve this case, or else her job is on the line. There's so much at stake and so many unanswered questions as we head into the season ender next week.
The Marlow Murder Club airs on Sundays on most local PBS channels at 9 p.m. ET and is available to stream on PBS.org and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel. All four episodes are available on PBS Passport for members to stream as a binge. Season 2 has already been greenlit.
