With the success of series like Max's Starstruck and Apple TV+'s Still Up, it feels like we may be heading for a romantic comedy renaissance, at least in the world of British television, Next up for American audiences is Sundance Now's The Lovers, a prickly, charming story about two very different people and the difficult choices love sometimes forces us to make.

Set in Northern Ireland, the series is a classic enemies-to-lovers romance about two people who appear to be utterly wrong for each other --- but may just turn out to be a perfect match. The Lovers follows the story of Janet, a bad-tempered, foul-mouthed supermarket worker with everything going wrong in her life, and Seamus, a self-centered political broadcaster who has a seemingly perfect existence. But when the two meet by accident, they find themselves increasingly drawn to one another, even though they have seemingly little in common. He's from London, while she hails from Belfast. She's a dedicated singleton, while he has a glamorous girlfriend. And yet the mismatched duo is proof that sometimes love can show up in entirely the wrong place.

Described as a "sexy, funny, fight-y love story", The Lovers stars Roisin Gallagher (The Dry) as Janet opposite Johnny Flynn (Emma) as Seamus. The series' ensemble also includes Conleth Hill (Vienna Blood) as Janet's supermarket boss, Phillip, and Alice Eve (Belgravia) as Frankie, Seamus's girlfriend.

"Like all good love stories, Janet and Seamus' relationship is full of tension, obstacles, desire, thrill, expectation... disappointment. It’s beautiful to see these two creatures connect with each other despite having nothing in common and very different views on the world," Gallagher said in a statement.

Here's the series' description.

The Lovers follows Janet (Roisin Gallagher) as supermarket worker who doesn’t care about anything, including her life, and Seamus (Johnny Flynn) a handsome, self-centered, political broadcaster with what looks to be a perfect London life and a celebrity girlfriend (Alice Eve). When they unexpectedly meet, they instantly clash – and yet also find themselves inextricably drawn to each other.

The cast listing for the series also includes Martin Quinn (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds), Simon Paisley Day (This England), Evelyn Miller (Foundation), and Jenn Murray (Love & Friendship).

A Drama Republic (Doctor Foster) production for Sky Studios and co-produced by Sundance Now, the six-part series is written and created by award-winning playwright David Ireland (Cyprus Avenue) and directed by BAFTA Award-winner Justin Martin (Prima Facie). Executive producers are Roanna Benn and Rebecca de Souza for Drama Republic and Hannah Pescod. The series' producer is Chris Martin.  It originally aired earlier this Fall on U.K. network Sky Atlantic and its streamer Sky Now.

The Lovers will premiere with two episodes on Thursday, December 7 on both Sundance Now and AMC+, with additional episodes dropping weekly on both platforms.

Lacy's love of British TV is embarrassingly extensive, but primarily centers around evangelizing all things Doctor Who, and watching as many period dramas as possible.

Digital media type by day, she also has a fairly useless degree in British medieval literature, and dearly loves to talk about dream poetry, liminality, and the medieval religious vision.
