The Lazarus Project didn't have the most fortuitous start in the U.S. Originally scheduled to debut on cable channel TNT and then stream on HBO Max, it bumped off the calendar less than a week before it was initially scheduled to premiere in January 2023 due to behind-the-scenes issues at parent company Warner Brothers Discovery, which was overhauling the streaming service. When it finally got reinstated on the calendar, six months later, in June 2023, it was largely overshadowed by the WGA strike and the oncoming drama of the SAG-AFTRA one coming right on its heels, run over by much larger shows all rushing to bank their PR interviews at once before the window shut. Imagine, then, our surprise when it turned out to be one of the best science fiction series of 2023.

Luckily, the delay in getting across the pond meant The Lazarus Project had already landed a renewal for Season 2 before it premiered on TNT, and the new season is now gearing up to premiere in the U.K. before 2023 is over. It also means that fans have a trailer to check out and an idea of where the show is heading with the new season. Considering that Season 1 ended on a bold cliffhanger where the entire world is trapped in an endless three-week time loop cycle, and one of the main characters, Janet, is stuck a whole decade in the past in 2012, it's nice to get an idea of what happens next.

Oh, and did we mention that after George spent an entire season trying to make sure the love of his life did not die, including breaking all the rules and practically destroying the world to save her, she dumped him? Free will, man. It's great. Check out the trailer.

Here is the Season 2 synopsis:

When the world locks into a never-ending time loop that will ultimately end with the planet’s complete extinction, the Lazarus team must race against time to find a solution before humanity is wiped out forever. Among their number is resolute Lazarus agent George, who’s been left in disgrace after betraying the organization in the name of love. George is determined to redeem himself and win back the trust of his friends, colleagues, and the love of his life. But when he discovers that the cause he’s fighting is more sinister than it appears, George begins to suspect that the only person he can really trust is himself.

Essiedu returns to star as George in Season 2, with Charly Clive co-starring as once-love-of-his-life, Sarah. Also back for Season 2 are the other members of the Lazarus team: Caroline Quentin as Wes, Anjli Mohindra as Archie, Rudi Dharmalingam as Shiv, Tom Burke as Rebrov, Vinette Robinson as Janet, and Salóme Gunnarsdóttir as Greta. Season 2 will also add several new faces, including Colin Salmon (Culprits), Royce Pierreson (The Irregulars), Safia Oakley-Green (The Burning Girls), Lorne MacFadyen (Starstruck), Zoe Telford (Mrs. Sidhu Investigates), Sam Troughton (Litvinenko), and James Atherton (Van der Valk).

Series creator Joe Barton once again wrote all eight episodes of The Lazarus Project, with directors Carl Tibbetts (We Hunt Together), Sean Spencer (Panic), and Pier Wilkie (Better) splitting helming duties. Barton executive produces along with Johnny Capps, Paul Gilbert, Adam Knopf, Marco Kreuzpaintner, and Julian Murphy.

The Lazarus Project debuts in the U.K. on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. It is expected to debut in the U.S. on TNT in 2024.
