Kate Winslet's Next Limited Series 'The Spot' Lands at Hulu

One of the more recent cultural changes has been the rise of prestige TV series starring women over 40. Once upon a time, once an actress reached "a certain age," she disappeared from the cultural consciousness; however, the current generation of A-list women is changing that. If the industry didn't create roles worth playing, they would start production companies and make their own. Nicole Kidman, for example, founded Blossom Films, which has produced every major hit series she's been in, from 2017's Big Little Lies to her current series Ex-Pats. Kate Winslet has followed suit, starting Juggle Productions, which will produce The Spot, Winslet's next series.

To be clear, not every project these production studios sign up for is a homerun. However, Winslet has a pretty good track record. Mare of Easttown was a massive hit for HBO during the "HBO Max" years, reminding critics and producers alike they didn't need Game of Thrones to have the cultural watercooler show. The Regime was overlooked by American critics who weren't into its oddball Upperclass British comedy, but it's not bad. (We've heard nothing about Trust since it was initially announced, but I am holding onto hope.)

However, The Spot will differ from those projects in one significant way: It won't be on HBO. Between Winslet's success with Mare of Easttown and her voicing a major character in the Avatar cartoons, she's still an A-list name that people will watch. Add in the story hailing from American writer Ed Solomon (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure), and the series became the subject of a bidding war, with multiple high-powered studios trying to woo Winslet away from HBO while Warner Bros. Discovery looked weak. Despite HBO doing what it could to land the project, in the end, Disney money prevailed, and the series will stream on Hulu.

Here is the show's logline:

The Spot follows a successful surgeon and her school teacher husband who suspect she might be responsible for a child’s hit-and-run death. While looking into the matter, dark secrets are revealed that will test their relationship as they confront the possibility of hidden guilt and betrayal.

No other cast is attached at this time other than Winslet, who plays the high-powered, ego-driven breadwinner wife who has more secrets than her poor husband is probably ready to find.

Solomon created and wrote the series and will serve as showrunner and executive producer alongside Winslet and A24, which will serve as lead studio and co-produce it with 20th Century Television.

The Spot will probably not start filming until 2025, which means the earliest fans can expect it to come out is the 2025-2026 TV season.
