Jenna Coleman Investigates a Lakeside Crime In 'The Jetty' Trailer
What do an arson, a missing persons cold case, and a true crime podcast have to do with one another? That's only one of the questions at the heart of the upcoming BBC crime thriller The Jetty, a four-part series that promises to explore everything from questions of sexual morality and illicit relationships to themes of identity, memory, and more.
Former Doctor Who companion Jenna Coleman makes her crime procedural debut as Detective Ember Manning, a rookie cop called in to help determine the cause of a mysterious fire at a holiday house in a picturesque Lancashire lake town. But as she investigates further, Ember stumbles upon a series of connections that threaten to unravel the threads of her own past.
One part coming-of-age story and one part twisty detective thriller, The Jetty touches on everything from arson and a missing persons case to a true crime podcast about violence against women and girls. There's even a brief hint in the trailer that Manning's own daughter is somehow at risk from some sort of unidentified threat.
The series' initial footage is grim and foreboding, shot through with ominous glimpses of the lake where, presumably, the series' titular jetty is located. Coleman's cool, capable demeanor is peak British procedural, despite her inexperience, her Ember is presented as capable and strong, a self-described "human lie detector" determined to get to the truth.
But as her investigation continues, she'll be forced to re-evaluate everything she thought she knew about her past, present, and the town she’s always called home.
Here's the series synopsis:
When a fire tears through a property in a scenic Lancashire lake town, Detective Ember Manning must work out how it connects to a podcast journalist investigating a missing persons cold case and an illicit relationship between a man in his twenties and two underage girls. But as Ember gets close to the truth, it threatens to destroy her life – forcing her to re-evaluate everything she thought she knew about her past, present and the town she’s always called home. As much a coming-of-age story as a detective thriller, The Jetty asks big questions about sexual morality, identity and memory, in the places that Me Too has left behind.
Alongside Coleman, the series also stars Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone) as Hitch, Ruby Stokes (Lockwood & Co.) as Hannah, Amelia Bullmore (The Buccaneers) as Sylvia, Tom Glynn-Carney (House of the Dragon) as Malachy, and Weruche Opia (I May Destroy You) plays Riz.
The ensemble cast includes Laura Marcus (The Serpent Queen), Bo Bragason (Renegade Nell), Matthew McNulty (Domina), Ralph Ineson (Nosferatu), David Ajala (Star Trek: Discovery), Nina Barker-Francis (The Flash), Miya Ocego (I Hate Suzie), Elliot Cowan (The Crown), Shannon Watson, Arthur Hughes (Help), and Dominic Coleman (Paddington).
The series is written and created by Cat Jones, known for her work on Harlots, EastEnders, and Waterloo Road. The four-part series is produced by Firebird Pictures and is directed by Marialy Rivas (Young & Wild). Executive producers are Elizabeth Kilgarriff, Sarah Wyatt, Jones, Rivas, and Coleman, alongside Jo McClellan for the BBC.
The Jetty will premiere on the BBC and BBC iPlayer on July 15. The crime drama somehow still doesn't have an American distributor, but hopefully, its impending U.K. broadcast will shake some news loose in that department sooner rather than later
