Harriet Walter Joins 'Killing Eve' As Filming Begins on Season 3
Good news for fans of BBC America and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Killing Eve is coming back for a third season. The series is the second major hit from the BBC's Americanized counterpart on this side of the pond after Orphan Black. It's continued success is not only great for fans of anglo-television but also female-produced fare.
Waller-Bridge began the show, writing and directing the first season. But after deciding to return to Fleabag for a second round instead of Killing Eve, she passed it off to Emerald Fennell to run. The new season will continue the tradition of giving the show to a new set of female writers and directors to control. Season 3 will officially be overseen by British writer Suzanne Heathcote (Fear the Walking Dead), who will act as lead writer and executive producer. Waller-Bridge has assured viewers that faith in another new showrunner will be rewarded:
I'm very excited that the Killing Eve baton is being passed onto another incredible writer for season three. We can sleep soundly knowing these characters are safe in Suzanne Heathcote's hilariously murderous hands.
Heathcote will be bringing some new faces aboard to work alongside stars Sandra Oh (Eve Polastri) and Jodie Comer (Villanelle). Longtime PBS favorite Harriet Walter, who has been in everything from the 1990s Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries to HBO's brilliant Succession is one of the notable names to arrive on set. She'll be joined by Danny Sapani, who will be recognizable to fans of Harlots and Netflix's The Crown.
Also, MI-6 agent Carolyn, aka Fiona Shaw is listed as returning for Season 3 as well. As of the moment, the rest of the cast is still up in the air, but it seems unlikely the series would part with Julian Barratt (Hugo), Sean Delaney (Kenny), or Nina Sosanya (Jess) so soon. (Seriously, Jess stays, or we riot.) No sign of Kim Bodnia as Konstantin in the listing either, but one can be pretty sure he'll be staying on as Carolyn's counterpart in crime. Word is the new season will follow in the steps of Season 2, picking up mere seconds after the events of the finale, where Villanelle shot Eve and left her for dead in Rome.
Based on the Codename Villanelle novellas by Luke Jennings, Killing Eve boasts the highest season to season growth of any TV drama since 2015, giving it the fastest audience growth on either broadcast or cable TV in the last four years. The series broke barriers last year with an Emmy nomination for Oh in the title role, and she's nominated again for Season 2, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series alongside Comer. The show garnered nine nominations altogether for the second season, including an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nod for Shaw.
Killing Eve Season 3 does not yet have a release date. But it's a pretty good bet that BBC America plans to bring it back around the same premiere date as the first two seasons, which would be in April of 2020.
