'Grantchester' Season 6 First Look Teases Will and Geordie On Holiday
With the premiere of Grantchester Season 6 set for this October, Masterpiece is starting to hype the program's return. It will be an expanded year for the series, which will run eight episodes, up two from the usual six. The show, usually a summer staple in the states, is kicking off the PBS fall slate this year, but if the first image is anything to go on, Grantchester will still stick to bringing at least some summertime goodness.
Though Masterpiece is trying to keep most of the new season of Grantchester under wraps, it's already been revealed thT the first episode of the new season will see the entire group go on holiday. And by the whole group, I mean the Keating family and the church family, so Geordi, Cathy, and the entire kiddie clan, including Esme and Will, Leonard, and Mrs. C. (Whether or not Daniel and/or Jack come along too remains to be seen. But the holiday won't be a restful one, as solving a murder at the resort where they are staying soon consumes both Will and Geordie.
Here's the first photo from the new season, showing off the 1950s era vacation postcard background.
Masterpiece also recently put out the official synopsis for an overview of the new season's arc. As fans expected, Grantchester will continue to move forward in time. Season 5 was set in 1957, so this is now 1958, and things are heating up in the small English town.
In an all-new season, it's 1958, and trouble is brewing in the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester. Reverend Will Davenport) relishes his role as a firebrand vicar, but the very role he loves puts him at odds with his own ideas when Leonard is caught up in a scandal. Meanwhile, Geordie finds his principles shaken, Mrs. Chapman is distraught, and Geordie's wife Cathy is defiant. With new crimes around every corner and morality and legality at odds, it's going to take all of Will's skill and empathy to navigate these choppy waters and help the ones he loves.
It sounds like whatever happens at the resort may have farther reaching implications than initially thought, and if Mrs. C is distraught, this may be a terrible situation for the gentle Leonard. The Anglican curate is a fan favorite, and depending on how bad the scandal gets, fans may join Mrs. C in needing a few hankies.
Season 6 will see the return of the current lineup of the entire Grantchester cast, including Robson Green as DI Geordie Keating, Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy, and Skye Lucia Degruttola as eldest daughter Esme. Tom Brittney remains steady as the show's leading man vicar, Rev. William Davenport. Al Weaver plays Leonard Finch and Tessa Peake-Jones is Mrs. C, Nick Brimble is her husband, Jack, and Oliver Dimsdale is Daniel Marlowe, Leo's semi-out boyfriend.
Grantchester Season 6 will air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on Masterpiece starting Oct. 3, 2021. Grantchester Seasons 1-5 are streaming on PBS Passport.
