Finale Episode “Curtis” Leaves Room for a Season 2 of 'Get Millie Black'
Curtis shepherds us through the finale episode of Get Millie Black, declaring his straight act so convincing he almost believed it himself. He fooled everyone except Millie, who clocked the romantic relationship between him and Daniel early into joining the Jamaican police (JPF). He respects Millie but finds her dangerous: she’s a loose cannon with nothing to lose.
At the London airport, Kyle (Theo Graham) greets “Daphne” and brings Millie to a shuttle. While he’s rounding up the other trafficked people, Millie searches the vehicle’s navigation system and memorizes the addresses on its route, hoping to find Romeo. Millie and the other passengers are taken to a nondescript, rundown row house. Millie uses her native Jamaican accent and meets Carol (Denise Black), the lady in charge, who takes her passport for “safekeeping.” She threatens Daphne’s children, reminding us Millie is not only endangering her own life but the innocents around her as well. Millie and the new arrivals are taken to clean an office building. There, she discovers Leon Douglas (David Webber), one of the missing persons, who reveals a nearby construction site is another trafficking avenue run by “Ahmed” for Sanguis Meridian. Millie makes a break for it, successfully sneaking out of the building and away from the traffickers.
Once again disregarding others in her single-minded pursuit, Millie threatens a worker at the construction site until he talks about Ahmed, who has been missing for weeks. She goes to Meera’s house next. After filling in her former partner on Holborn, Millie lies, allowing Meera to believe the JPF condones her investigation. Meera’s intel reveals Ahmed was beaten to death by Nico Danvers (Jamael Westman), who was jailed for the murder. Meera agrees to help find Romeo, and Millie repays her trust by hacking her phone to get access to Danvers in jail.
Millie and Meera visit an address she memorized from the shuttle, a nail salon. Millie recognizes one of the nail techs as Pia (Renee Bailey), the woman who flew to London with Romeo. They sit for manicures while a stern woman, Natalie (Umi Myers), oversees the appointment. Millie informs Pia that she and Meera are police and can help her escape. Pia willingly divulges what she knows about Romeo’s whereabouts but won’t leave voluntarily because her captors will harm her family. Nails finished, Millie visits Nico Danvers at the jail with her “clearance,” flashing a newly forged ID.
However, Danvers somehow recognizes her and calls her by her real name. Millie is profoundly alarmed and asks if he’s Lindo. Danvers taunts her, and Millie gets frustrated, asking about Romeo and increasingly losing her cool. When she puts her hands on Danvers, the guards end the visit. When Meera learns Millie visited Danvers with a stolen identity, she realizes in horror that the JPF doesn’t even know Millie is there. Meera feels used, and they argue, with Millie explaining how haunted she feels by Victor, the boy they lost. Meera kicks her out but agrees not to report her.
Meanwhile, Holborn survived being stabbed. After recovering, he learns that no one knows where Millie is, and Lindo is not pleased with the unfinished job. He collects Janet’s body and deposits it in the ocean. The next thing we know, Holborn’s creeping up on Millie in the street. She whips around with a stolen knife and attacks while Holborn plays defense. He claims he’s not there to kill her; he wants her help: Lindo is now threatening his family. Millie reluctantly agrees to work together.
Curtis and Daniel are enjoying private time in their apartment when the JPF bursts in, guns blazing. Stennet leads the raid, dragging the two men out half-dressed, parading their secret relationship for the whole building to watch. The jig is up: the JPF knows Curtis is covering for Millie. At the station, he can only watch Daniel being interrogated. When it's his turn, Curtis tells his colleagues everything he knows about Millie.
Holborn reveals Lindo is a woman; she initially presented herself as an informant to take down Sanguis Meridian. The common thread between Danvers and Lindo is Ahmed, so they visit his widow, Ambra (Joanna Ignaczewska). Millie pressures her about Ahmed’s operation, but they learn nothing new. Next, they track down Kyle, the driver. They strongarm info out of him, learning Romeo will be sold online. They discover the nail salon manager, Natalie, is actually Danvers’ sister; they’re working together. She anonymously became Lindo and began child trafficking for personal profit through the existing pipeline.
Millie meets a darknet specialist, Bo (Cornell S. John), in a pub while Holborn stays in the car. Inside, Millie and Bo bond over the shared failure of losing Victor. Holborn calls Millie, getting out of the car to check on her. She walks outside to take his call, and when Holborn steps into the main road, a car comes out of nowhere and runs him down. Millie jumps out of sight and sees Natalie exit the vehicle; she shoots Holborn point-blank and peels out. Millie is shaken but takes Holborn’s gun. Bo escorts her off the scene.
At Bo’s place, he finds Romeo listed for sale on the dark web, complete with a video of him smiling. But he and Millie quickly learn he’s already been sold to an anonymous buyer. To pinpoint his location, Bo analyzes the background noise in Romeo’s video, which leads back to Ahmed’s widow – Millie recognizes her crying baby and the program on the telly. She does at least notify Meera of her whereabouts via voicemail before barging into Ambra’s house and demanding the keys to where they’re holding Romeo. She handcuffs Ambra to the stairs and sticks a gun in her face, warning her not to call anyone.
Millie lets herself into the house next door. She sneaks upstairs and is beyond relieved to find Romeo alive and unharmed. She says she’s there to bring him home to his parents. Millie hides when Auntie (Rachel-Sophia Anthony) comes upstairs to collect Romeo for his “big trip.” She follows and surprises Auntie and Uncle (Zariah Bailey) with her gun drawn. Millie pulls Romeo out of the room. With her back turned, Uncle tries to rush her with a knife, but she shoots him. Millie is about to flee with Romeo when Natalie strolls in the open door. She shoots at them, but Millie quickly pulls Romeo to safety.
Despite being humiliated by the cops, Daniel returns to the apartment to stay, which surprises Curtis. Meanwhile, Curtis’ wayward partner is launching her own offensive, begging Natalie to put the gun down so she can help her and revealing she’s got backup on the way. She wants Natalie to surrender, but Natalie knows Sanguis Meridian will assassinate her and Danvers; she refuses. Then, they face each other in the hallway and take their shots. Both women fall.
Romeo bravely jumps up when he hears police sirens and runs out the door where cops are swarming. Meera intercepts Romeo, gets him to safety, and then leads a team to Millie inside. Millie is bullet-grazed, and Natalie has fled, but Romeo is finally saved.
In the aftermath, Millie is rightfully stripped of her badge, gun, and position. Curtis notes how much she lost, including herself and her family, but he reckons she willingly gave it away. He uses her as an example to fight for his relationship with Daniel. Millie sells her mother’s house and tries to find Hibiscus. She leaves a voicemail with a meaningful apology, telling Hibiscus she loves her and hopes their Mama’s house gets bulldozed.
So Millie doesn’t die after all. I’m not disappointed she survived – she’s a gale-force wind that deserves more screen time – but there was a built-up expectation and a lack of consequences for her brash tactics. Despite this, the series succeeded in telling a smart, multi-faceted story rich with meaning and memorable personalities.
