The Friday News Roundup: Last Roundup of February Edition

News Roundup.jpg
Hurrah, it’s Friday! It’s a rainy, somewhat dreary Friday in the DC area, but I suppose that does make me feel a bit more authentically British somehow. (Don’t judge.) This means, obviously, that it’s time for the best part of the week – the News Roundup!

Click on through for all the important bits from the world of British entertainment this week, including news on Downton Abbey, Eternal Law, Titanic, Doctor Who, Top Gear, Call the Midwife, Richard Hammond’s Crash Course, that new American remake of Only Fools and Horses, and more!

Eternal Law, the latest show from Life on Mars creators Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah, has been cancelled by ITV after just one series.

From Downton Abbey to Call the Midwife to Upstairs Downstairswhy is period drama so popular right now?

Speaking of Call the Midwife – it has been renewed for a second series, no real surprise given that it has been BBC One’s most successful new drama in over 10 years.

Inspector Spacetime, the Doctor Who parody that was featured a couple of times in NBC comedy Community, is going to be made into an actual web series, if these fans have anything to say about it.

Small feature on Downton creator Julian Fellowes’ next project, Titanic.

This is a cool feature about British cuisine after World War I: Dining After Downton Abbey: Why British Food Was So Bad For So Long.

An awful lot of you tuned in to the Downton Abbey finale – well done!

Filming on Doctor Who Series 7 is officially under way. Another behind the scenes photo shows Matt Smith filming at a “secret seaside location in South Wales.” (How secret can it be if you got photos? But, whatever. I’m just jealous.)

In case you didn’t see our this earlier in the week - Mark Williams, who played Harry Potter’s Arthur Weasley, is set to guest star in Series 7 of Doctor Who. Sherlock’s Rupert Graves (Lestrade) is also set to appear in the new series.

Dominic Monaghan, who many of you probably know from his roles on Lost and The Lord of the Rings trilogy is getting his own travel-adventure series on BBC America, called Wild Things.

Some film news for my fellow Benedict Cumberbatch obsessives – you may want to go have a look at the first photo from the new Star Trek sequel.

Being Human star Russell Tovey is set to appear in a new comedy from the makers of Rev.

Steven Moffat says it was Sherlock that made star Benedict Cumberbatch sexy. Going to have to disagree with this statement personally (I think we’re all aware of my Cumberbatch feelings), but I suppose everyone is allowed to be wrong sometimes.

Shirley McClaine says that Downton Abbey  filming (which started last weekend) is “going well” so far.

UK TV authority lets Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson off the hook for his “should be shot” comment about striking public workers.

Justin Timberlake is apparently going to play a young Sir Elton John in upcoming biopic Rocket Man.

Top Gear’s Richard Hammond talks to auto blog Jalopnik about his new TV series Richard Hammond’s Crash Course.

John Leguizamo has been cast as Del Boy in the new American remake of classic comedy Only Fools and Horses.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling appears set to pen her first novel for adults.

The Inbetweeners stars Simon Bird and Joe Thomas get a new Sky series called Chickens.

In case you missed our post on it yesterday, it’s true – Foyle’s War will be back with new episodes in 2013!

Lacy's love of British TV is embarrassingly extensive, but primarily centers around evangelizing all things Doctor Who, and watching as many period dramas as possible.

Digital media type by day, she also has a fairly useless degree in British medieval literature, and dearly loves to talk about dream poetry, liminality, and the medieval religious vision. (Sadly, that opportunity presents itself very infrequently.) York apologist, Ninth Doctor enthusiast, and unabashed Ravenclaw. Say hi on Threads or Blue Sky at @LacyMB.
