The Final Season of 'Peaky Blinders' Will Arrive on Netflix in June
The final season of popular period gangland drama Peaky Blinders is currently airing in the U.K., and American fans were preparing themselves to wait for several months to find out how the story of the Shelby clan (at least in this particular incarnation) would come to an end. After all, previous seasons took several months to cross the pond from the BBC to America following the end of their runs. But it appears the powers that be have taken pity on U.S. fans because the end of the Peaky Blinders era will be here sooner than any of us ever expected.
According to Netflix, all six episodes of Season 6 will arrive on the streamer on June 10. This is all sorts of exciting because in years past American viewers have had to wait until well into the Fall for the series to hit our shores.
The Cillian Murphy-led drama is set in Birmingham in the aftermath of World War I and follows the exploits of Tommy Shelby and his family, leaders of the infamous gang known as the Peaky Blinders. (Though the Shelbys are fictional, the gang they are a part of did exist during the 1890s, even if the real group never gained nearly as much power or influence as Tommy and his brothers boast.) Over the course of the series, we've seen the family fortunes rise and fall as they've battled external threats and internal betrayals.
As we head into Season 6, the gang is reeling from a failed assassination attempt against fascist leader Oswald Mosley, an event that has left several key players injured or dead and may well have been caused by one of their own turning traitor. But while Tommy will square off against various foes in this final run of episodes, his most formidable enemy remains himself.
Returning alongside Murphy are Tom Hardy, Paul Anderson, Finn Cole, Anya Taylor-Joy, Natasha O’Keeffe, Sophie Rundle, and Stephen Graham. The first episode of Season 6 is reportedly dedicated to the late Helen McCrory, who played the iconic Polly Gray and passed away in early 2021.
“I think the whole series is really in tribute to her and to honor her,” Murphy told Variety. “Her presence and her character’s presence are very much still felt in the series, and it is very much part of Tommy’s journey in the season. It’ll be different without her, you know. It simply won’t be the same. I’ve spoken about how phenomenal she was as an actress and as a person and it is an enormous loss to the whole acting community and not just for our show. My thoughts are always with [husband] Damian [Lewis] and her kids. I just hope that the show will live up to her memory and our memory of her.”
Though these episodes will mark the official conclusion of Peaky Blinders as a television series, it won't be the last time we see at least some portion of the Shelby family. A feature film is in the works, one that is reportedly meant to serve as the conclusion to the series' story.
Peaky Blinders Seasons 1-5 are currently streaming on Netflix. Season 6 arrives on June 10.
