Everything British Worth Streaming in September 2024
Cable networks getting into the original series game at the end of the 1990s was the first death knell for the standard TV season running from September to June; however, September didn't truly lose its status until streaming became the way of the future. Broadcast networks still tried to debut everything in mid-September, but the crawl to the end of the month was slow but sure. It should be noted that the 2024-2025 TV season is the first where Broadcast has managed to return to normal after the pandemic and strike disruptions; but that being said, there are multiple networks, like the CW and AMC Networks' federation of streaming services, who seem to have shifted to October for fall debuts semi-permanently.
I bring this up because September 2024's streaming list of British series is oddly thin in some of the usual areas. Netflix, for example, had zero British series debuting in September other than the usual return of The Great British Baking Show; AMC+, Acorn TV, Sundance Now, and BBC America likewise are spooling out the final episodes of their July and August debuts with no new British shows arriving until October.
Meanwhile, BritBox is filling the void with multiple critical darlings importing over from the BBC and ITV this month; Apple TV+ has shifted its regular calendar to have a hit show debut in September. Even Paramount+ and Amazon Prime (who regularly sit out in the leaner months) have British debuts to boast about. Let's run down everything British coming to the U.S. and which streaming services they'll debut on for September 2024.
Acorn TV
The Long Shadow
There are no brand new series debuting on a weekly schedule for Acorn TV and nothing British worth mentioning coming to AMC Networks' other streaming services. However, it is picking up shows from Sundance and AMC+. 2023's The Lovers, for example, will arrive as a binge on Acorn TV this month on Monday, September 16, as will the French series Candice Renoir Season 10. But the main weekly release is the Yorkshire Ripper mystery The Long Shadow, which was initially supposed to arrive on Sundance Now in November 2023 and was pushed to spring 2024. The series debuts with two installments on Monday, September 9, 2024, with one a week to follow.
Apple TV+
Slow Horses Season 4
After airing Seasons 2 and 3 as a weekly December series, Apple TV+ moves Slow Horses to September for Season 4. Based on Mick Herron's novel series, Slow Horses has spent the last three seasons tracing the antics of the residents of Slough House, the place MI-5 puts their incompetent spies, whom they can't fire for various reasons. Season 4 adapts book four, Spook Street, which picks up in the aftermath of Season 3's in-house betrayal and the choices made by the two men who run the joint, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and River Cartwright (Jack Lowden). Slow Horses Season 4 will debut with two episodes on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, on Apple TV+, with one a week to follow.
BritBox
Trigger Point Season 2
After BritBox rescued Trigger Point's first season from the depths of Peacock, where it was languishing, the streaming service now premieres Season 2, which jumps ahead a year. Vicky McClure stars as Lana Washington, who has newly returned to the EXPO bomb squad after helping train bomb disposal teams in Ukraine. But of course, wherever Lana goes, so do the bomb threats, and it's not long before things start popping off. The series premieres on Thursday, September 5, with two episodes and will continue with two episodes a week on Thursdays through September 19, 2024.
The Bay Season 5
While Trigger Point blows up Thursdays, The Bay will return for Season 5 to occupy Wednesdays. The series has gained popularity since Grantchester's Morven Christie exited after Season 2 and was replaced by Marsha Thomason from COBRA. This season's case begins when a 23-year-old university student is found dead on the edge of the docks, giving Morecambe’s MIU team another case to solve. The show begins with a two-episode premiere on Wednesday, September 18, and follows with two episodes every Wednesday through October 2, 2024.
The Tower: Gallowstree Lane
BritBox finishes off its trio of female-led detective shows with the third season of The Tower, subtitled Gallowstree Lane. Gemma Whelan returns as DS Sarah Collins, and Tahirah Sharif as PC Lizzie Adama. Season 3 picks up two years after the events of Season 2, with Collins called in to investigate a teenage boy's murder, only to find herself again paired up with Lizzie, now trying to balance a career and motherhood. The series premieres on Thursday, September 26, with two episodes and will continue with two episodes a week on Thursdays through October 10, 2024.
Netflix
The Great British Baking Show Season 15
As per usual, Netflix cannot announce The Great British Baking Show will return to streaming until Channel 4 does first, and, like most U.K. broadcast networks, Channel 4 doesn't announce reality shows (or reveal casts) until the show is less than a month out from debut. However, let's not pretend after 14 seasons, we don't know how this works. Love Productions filmed Season 15 in April/May/June 2024. Channel 4 has premiered new seasons on the last Tuesday of the last full week of September since the pandemic, and Netflix streams it 60 hours after it airs in the U.K. So sure, GBBO is technically September TBD. However, if it doesn't debut on Ch4 on Tuesday, September 24, and on Netflix on Friday, September 27, 2024, I'll eat my hat.
Paramount+/Showtime
Colin From Accounts Season 2
For those here for slapstick, awkward Australian romantic dramedy, Colin from Accounts — which is the name of the series' dog, not the main character — is back for a second season. Created and written by and starring husband-and-wife team Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer, the series focuses on couple Gordon and Ashley who met cute over him running over the dog — the aforementioned "Colin from Accounts." Don't worry; the dog is perfectly fine. The new season premieres on Thursday, September 26, 2024, and streams one episode a week.
Prime Video/FreeVee/MGM+
A Very Royal Scandal
Amazon's Prime Video returns to its award-winning A Very .... Scandal series for a third installment. However, this time, it's not a Very British or Very English Scandal but A Very Royal Scandal. Also, if you watched Netflix's Scoop, you've already seen it; it's just this time Ruth Wilson plays Emily Maitlis instead of Gillian Anderson and Michael Sheen plays Prince Andrew instead of Rufus Sewell, but it's the same reenactment of the utterly brutal BBC Newsnight interview. All installments drop on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
