The 'Downton Abbey' Movie Has an Official Release Date

Start planning your theater trips now, folks – the Downton Abbey movie has an official release date!
The film, which will bring back almost every major cast member from the franchise’s mega popular television run, hits theaters on September 20, 2019. (Note that this is the in North American release date. Those lucky ducks overseas will get to see it a week earlier, on September 13.)
So, it’ll pretty much be out exactly when a lot of smart people thought it probably would be, but it’s nice to have that information officially confirmed. (Though I’ll admit I was kind of banking on a Christmas release. Holidays with the Crawleys is a thing I enjoy.) And there’s something about having an official release date that we can put in our day planners and cover in glitter and stickers or whatever happens to float your particular life planning needs that makes it feel all the more real.
This is really happening!
“Since the series ended, fans of Downton have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter,” said Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski. “We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen next September.”
Filming began on the highly anticipated feature film earlier this month. It will reunite stars Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Brendan Coyle, Joanne Froggatt, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan and, of course, the great Dame Maggie Smith. (And more - pretty much the only original cast member who's said they aren't participating is Lily James.)
Downton Abbey the Movie will also feature a few new faces, most notably award-winner Imelda Staunton. (Who also happens to be Jim Carter's real life wife, because it's a small world in British acting.)
Interestingly enough, we still don’t know quite what the film will be called. Downton the Movie is auseful shorthand, but who knows whether the film will be called anything other than Downton Abbey, as the series was before it.
We also don’t have any idea what it will be about, though we can all surmise it should pick up about where the series itself left off, in early 1925. Other than that? Who knows!
