'D.I. Ray' Delivers a Dark Twist in the Frank Chapman Murder Case for the Season 2 Finale
Who says you can't have it all? Rachita Ray cracked the case, cleaned up some workplace corruption, and had time for a hot date in the D.I. Ray Season 2 finale. She's always been a multitasker, but she really went all out to wrap up all of her loose ends in the season ender.
We'll start with the Frank Chapman murder. Rachita was right that the Mochanis had nothing to do with Frank's death. The Chapman boss was trying to leverage Rav into starting a sex trafficking ring; however, Rav was only trafficking one girl so that she could provide a kidney for Amara's daughter in exchange for the city bounty contract. It turns out that Frank Chapman was a habitual sexual abuser. He molested Lou Kirkby's (John Vernon) daughter and his own granddaughter, Amy (Heather Forster). Amy stood up to him and attempted to get a video of him admitting that he molested her so that she could stop it from happening to her little sister. She initially shot Frank in self-defense. He drove himself to the hospital while Amy called her dad, Dave. Dave ordered the final execution of his father, and Nurse Megan (Phoebe Marshall) died in the crossfire.
Suzie Chapman ordered Rav Mochani's kidnapping because she believed that he was the one who murdered her dad. While Rav was in custody, Suzie figured out it was actually David and that everything she'd done since had been done to protect Amy. Clive was actually the one to put it together when he discovered a photo of Frank Chapman with Lou's daughter, but Rachita was the one to apprehend Amy and bring her to the station to confess. D.C.I Henderson assured the team that Amy would not get a jail sentence considering everything she'd been through.
You'd think that untangling the threads of a triple homicide would be enough in one day, but Rachita pulled double duty by also taking down Beardsmore. With Clive's help, the two of them confirmed that Beardsmore is the mystery number in the group chat that was saying the most vile things about Rachita. They entrapped him in the parking lot just as he was about to text the group. He attempted to pull rank and have Rachita and Clive arrested, but Henderson stepped in and called in Beardsmore's superior officer to arrest him instead. Rachita informed the team in the next scene that he was suspended until further notice. Maybe Rachita can focus on work without an absolute monster constantly breathing down her neck.
So, things are obviously going much better for Rachita at the office, but they are also going much better at home. She told her mother that she was pursuing the discrimination case against the police department now that she had concrete evidence of Beardsmore in the group chat. After initially trying to talk Rachita out of pushing her luck a few episodes back, her mother broke down in tears over how proud she was of her daughter. It was an adorable moment for the two of them after Rachita had spent so much time this season being isolated and alone.
Rachita is also getting back on the relationship saddle. D.I. Patrick Holden stepped up as a confidant in the penultimate episode, but it seems there's more than just friendship between the two coworkers. At the end of the episode, he arrives at Rachita's apartment with a fancy bottle of wine (and Doritos!), and the two have an adorable season-ending kiss in the doorway.
Rachita struggled this season to find her footing at work and build a community of people she could trust. It turns out that her team had her back the entire time. Liam submitted a "complaint" about Rachita to Henderson, but it wasn't actually a complaint. He told Henderson that Rachita needed more backup because he was concerned she would burn herself out. Beardsmore heard about it and tried to turn it into a complaint. No one was actively trying to sabotage Rachita except for Beardsmore. Now that he's out of the picture, Rachita can focus on solving cases with a team she knows is there for her.
Season 1 ended on a bit of a downer note, with Rachita being suspended from the force and feeling like the scapegoat for the department's failings. Even though the Frank Chapman case concluded with a dark twist, the team got Amy the help she needed, and it feels like everyone is in a better place. We'll happily return to see Rachita solve more cases, but this also feels like a satisfactory way to wrap things up for the character if we do not get more episodes.
D.I. Ray Seasons 1 and 2 are now available to stream on the PBS app, the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel, and PBS Passport. Season 3 has not yet been announced.
