The 'Derry Girls' Episode of 'The Great British Baking Show' is Coming to Netflix in December
Two great British programs are joining forces to make our holidays a little brighter - the Great British Baking Show special featuring the cast of the hit comedy Derry Girls is coming to Netflix next month.
Given everything that's happened since the Baking Show (or the Bake Off depending on what side of the pond you're on) left its original BBC home to move to Channel 4. Here in the U.S., the program became a Netflix original, shifting it from its previous home at PBS and making it really difficult to determine which season you're watching at any given point. And that, of course, isn't counting the one-off holiday specials, master classes, and other tertiary Baking Show-adjacent properties which all often make their way to America in what might be called a less than swift fashion.
On the plus side, since the Baking Show moved to Netflix, American audiences are getting to see the new seasons in something that's sort of close to real-time. The episodes air in the U.K. on Tuesdays and become available for Netflix viewers on Fridays, leaving fans to dodge spoilers for a mere three days rather than three months. The same can not be said of things like those one-offs and holiday outings, which seem to show up as nice extras whenever Netflix can secure the rights to stream them.
Such is the case with this particular festive installment, here titled The Great British Baking Show: Holidays Season 3. (Are there really three seasons of holiday baking? I have no idea, but we're just going to go with it.) Basically, this episode is the New Year's Day special that aired on Channel 4 back in January of 2020, when it was referred to as The Great Festive Bake Off - and was clearly filmed before Matt Lucas replaced Sandi Toksvig in the tent. (Sniff.)
Reportedly, it is an absolutely hilarious hour which welcomes back four favorites from seasons past as well as the cast of my new favorite series Derry Girls. In the trailer below, we see Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Erin), Nicola Coughlan (Clare), Jamie-Lee O'Donnell (Michelle), Siobhan McSweeney (Sister Michael), and Dylan Llewellyn (James) court disaster as they attempt to assemble some New Year's-themed treats.
Do I have any idea whether any of the Derry Girls are bakers? No, I do not. Will I watch this the minute it's available? Absolutely, I will. This is the content I need in 2020.
The new Great British Baking Show Holidays installment hits Netflix on December 4.
Is anyone else as excited to watch this as I am? Let's discuss in the comments.
