Just in time for the holiday season, The Larkins, the buzzy new adaptation of classic period series The Darling Buds of May, is heading to America, thanks to streaming service Acorn TV.
The original adaptation of H.E Bates' classic novel first aired thirty years ago and became one of ITV’s all-time highest-rated television comedy dramas. This new version is adapted by acclaimed screenwriter Simon Nye, who also brought us four seasons of the heartwarming drama The Durrells in Corfu, and aims to capture the warmth, optimism, and escapism of the Larkin family for a modern generation.
The series follows the wheeler-dealing adventures of the iconic Larkin family in the idyllic Kent countryside. Set in the late 1950s, each episode contains a story of the week concerning their personal family sagas, and the politics of their village life alongside series arc stories.
Bridgerton's Sabrina Bartlett stars as eldest Larkin daughter Mariette, alongside Doctor Who star Bradley Walsh and The Thick of It's Joanna Scanlon as Larkin family heads Pop Larkin and his wife Ma. Together with their six children, the Larkins navigate their idyllic life in the Kent countryside whilst dealing with threats from government officials and snobbish second homeowners.
Newcomer Tok Stephens plays village new arrival Cedric ‘Charley’ Charlton. An unworldly accountant from the city sent to investigate the Larkins’ tax affairs, he is soon distracted by the beautiful Mariette, with whom he falls head over heels in love. However, he quickly discovers that he has a romantic rival in the form of the handsome and mysterious Tom Fisher (Stephen Hagan). Mariette, on the other hand, may have plans of her own, which don’t involve men.
The series' ensemble cast also includes Tony Gardner (Last Tango in Halifax), Amelia Bullmore (Vienna Blood), Peter Davison (Doctor Who) and Kriss Dosanjh (Intruder).
The first two episodes of The Larkins' six-episode first season will be available to stream beginning Monday, December 13, with weekly installments releasing each subsequent week through January 10.
