The 'Call The Midwife' Christmas Special Photos Promise A Happy Holidays

What's that? It's not even Halloween yet? Lalalalala, Call the Midwife can't hear you. It's too busy getting ready for Christmas.

The popular PBS series already aired in the U.K. earlier this year, but due to 2020 filming delays is only just now airing on PBS. But that doesn't mean Call The Midwife is waiting to get back in the swing of things. Since the series' second season, it has aired a Christmas special every single year, one that is so popular even PBS does a day-and-date broadcast of it over here, one of the very few programs on which Public Television bestows that honor. The cast and crew have already been hard at work, and the first photos are now online.

Season 10 marks a decade on the air for Call The Midwife, and this new episode will be the tenth Christmas special the series has done. Because the BBC premieres the season in January, Call The Midwife's Christmas episodes are technically considered the start of the new season, unlike most shows, which do a Christmas episode as a bonus after the season has ended. (Looking at you, Downton Abbey). So the new special, which will technically be considered the start of Season 11, is the tenth special, despite the first season not having one.

Along with the photos, the Call The Midwife team released a message full of early holiday cheer and festive emojis that suggest this could be a wedding episode too.

Hello all! Today we got our hands on the very first sneak-peek pictures of the new Call the Midwife Christmas Special - featuring Daniel Laurie (Reggie) And Leonie Elliott (Lucille)! We have questions... Reggie....are those pyjamas you're wearing....in snow?? Does that snowman have pointy ears? How adorable is Lucille in green!! Of course, we're not going to tell you what happens in this episode, except to say that our own lovely Lucille has a LOT to prepare for... We are all very proud of this year's Christmas episode and just can't WAIT for you to see it!

This is also the first year since the inaugural 2012 season that the show hasn't run a full eight episodes after airing the special — Season 10 was cut down by one to seven installments due to the 2020 filming shutdown. So for fans here in the states, where the Christmas special will air only a few weeks after Season 10 has ended, the Christmas installment will feel a little like that missing eighth episode.

With filming back on its regular schedule and Season 11 expected to arrive on the BBC in its usual January spot on the calendar, the shortened season probably won't feel too short. The new season will almost certainly follow here on PBS next spring.

Call the Midwife Season 10 is currently airing Sunday nights on most PBS stations. The series is also streaming early for members on PBS Passport, with weekly new installments coming every Friday. Season 11 is slated to arrive in 2022.
