Streaming service BritBox will be closing out summer with a little extra sizzle next month with the launch of the new series The Ex-Wife, a four-part psychological thriller about a woman who can't seem to let go of her previous relationship.

Based on Jess Ryder’s novel of the same name, the series follows Tasha, a young woman who feels like she is finally living the dream: She has a dream house, a loving husband, and a beautiful little girl. But her perfect family life has a glaring problem skirting its edges --- her husband's ex-wife won't leave them alone and seems entirely determined to keep herself in the picture when it comes to his life. When Tasha returns home one day to find her life turned upside down, she realizes that the dream she is living may be about to turn into a nightmare.

Ryder's novel has been compared to such hits as The Girl on the TrainGone Girl, and The Couple Next Door, which certainly offers a decent hint of what kind of story we're in for.

“BritBox fans are always hungry for the latest must-see thrillers,” Robert Schildhouse, EVP North America, BritBox International, said in a statement. “With gripping plots and strong casts, we expect The Ex-Wife and Granite Harbour [which also drops on the streamer this August] to captivate our community of quality-seekers in the months to come. Both series contain all the unique ingredients of a BritBox hit — full of familiar faces and mysteries that will keep viewers in suspense.”

The four-part series boasts an all-star ensemble that includes Celine Buckens (Showtrial) as Tasha, Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow) as her husband Jack, Janet Montgomery (New Amsterdam) as the titular ex-wife Jen, and Jordan Stephens (Rogue One) as Tasha’s friend Sam.

In one of the weird turns that can only happen in the world of international television rights, The Ex-Wife was actually one of the first original dramas commissioned in the U.K. by Paramount+, along with several other titles including Sexy BeastThe FlatshareA Gentleman in Moscow, and The Burning Girls. Yet, it will be arriving in America on streaming service BritBox rather than Paramount American streaming counterpart, for reasons that will likely remain a mystery to the rest of us forever. (But it makes a compelling argument as to why we need a flowchart for this stuff!)

The Ex-Wife is written by New York Times bestselling author Catherine Steadman, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Mike Benson for Clapperboard; Giuliano Papadia and Chiara Cardoso for BlackBox Multimedia; Olivia Pahl and Herbert Kloiber for Night Train Media; and the novel's author Jess Ryder. It is directed by Brian O'Malley (The Lodgers) and is being distributed internationally by All3Media. (It streamed in the U.K. on Paramount+ last Fall.)

All four episodes will be available to stream on Britbox beginning Thursday, August 10.

Lacy's love of British TV is embarrassingly extensive, but primarily centers around evangelizing all things Doctor Who, and watching as many period dramas as possible.

Digital media type by day, she also has a fairly useless degree in British medieval literature, and dearly loves to talk about dream poetry, liminality, and the medieval religious vision. (Sadly, that opportunity presents itself very infrequently.) York apologist, Ninth Doctor enthusiast, and unabashed Ravenclaw. Say hi on Threads or Blue Sky at @LacyMB.
