The 'Beyond Paradise' Trailer Takes DI Goodman Far Away from St. Marie
Death In Paradise's upcoming spinoff Beyond Paradise is a major deal for the BBC and BritBox. It stars Kris Marshall, the series' most popular detective from the four leads over the show's history, and like The Sister Boniface Mysteries, there's a built-in loyal fandom who will tune in and check it out. With a simultaneous release on both sides of the pond on the BBC and BritBox at the end of February 2023, it could be the big hit that helps make BritBox a major player among the U.S. streaming services, or at least one that helps push it over the 10 million subscriber line.
Despite the show's close ties to the original, the show's creators, Tony Jordan and Tim Key, promise the new series will be different. For one thing, there will be fewer murders, and the premiere won't have a mystery at all. "We're not ruling out murders, and we'll have them when someone kills someone! Then Humphrey will investigate it," Jordan told Digital Spy in a recent interview. "But we want to do different types of crime because that's really interesting. It allows you to go to different places and stops you from being tied so rigidly to a certain format."
Though the series is a simultaneous release on either side of the pond, this does mean the BBC is taking the lead on marketing. That means BritBox couldn't announce the release dates until the BBC did, and the trailer had to come from the BBC first. Thankfully, the Beeb has come through, giving fans their first look at the new show.
Here's the show's synopsis:
Beyond Paradise is the spin-off Death In Paradise, which follows Kris Marshall's Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman and his now-fiancée Martha Lloyd. The series picks up after the pair have left "paradise" and are navigating a new life together in the idyll of rural Britain. Seeking a quieter life away from the stress of the big city, DI Goodman takes a job in Martha's hometown. Curiously, things don't go exactly as either of them are expecting as the pair soon find that country life is anything but peaceful. Humphrey can’t help but be distracted by the town’s surprisingly high crime rate, which presents a different challenging case each week for him to solve.
The series stars Marshall and Death in Paradise former cast member Sally Bretton reprising their roles as DI Humphrey Goodman and his now-fiancee, Martha Lloyd. The new series will introduce Dylan Llewellyn (Derry Girls) as PC Kelby Hartford, Zahra Ahmadi (Innocent) as DS Esther Williams, Felicity Montagu (Tom Jones) as office support Margo Martins, and Barbara Flynn (The Durrells in Corfu) as Matha's mother, Anne.
Beyond Paradise's first season will run six installments (unlike Death in Paradise, which has run eight episodes for all of its 12 seasons). It will premiere on Friday, February 24, 2023, on BBC One and BritBox, and will air/stream on a weekly release schedule.
