'Beyond Paradise's Season 2 Trailer Takes Us Back to Shipton Abbott
Season 2 of Beyond Paradise, the Kris Marshall-led spinoff of Death in Paradise, finally has landed a release date. Season 13 of Death in Paradise is currently airing in. the U.K. and streaming on BritBox in the U.S., and on the same day it concludes in each country, the second season of the spinoff will kick off, making the two shows a back-to-back run in both countries.
The series is a bit of an oddity, as it is set in the U.K. in the fictional town of Shipton Abbott, on the Devon Coast, and is called "Paradise" in the title, due to being part of what the BBC is calling the "Paraverse." However, there's no island, there's no beaches, there's no actual paradise, it's just a show set in the U.K., like any other British police procedural. (Albeit in a very tony, expensive area where the houses cost an arm and a leg.) But fans of the series love it, and considering the lead, DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall), never loved Saint-Marie (the real paradise); perhaps it's just that paradise is in the eye of the beholder.
One good thing about Shipton Abbott is that, despite its less paradise setting, there are fewer murderous cases for DI Goodman to solve, or at least, that was the case in Season 1. Hopefully that will remain the same for the new season as well.
Here's the full Season 2 synopsis:
Shipton Abbott continues to keep DI Humphrey Goodman and his team busy, with a baffling new crime each episode. From a death on a steam train to a missing teacher, the team has their work cut out. Even more so, with Police HQ’s threat of the local station house closure hanging over them—the pressure is on to get results.
Meanwhile, Humphrey and Martha’s journey to find their own version of a family continues as they explore the possibility of fostering. Martha’s mother, Anne, throws herself into the world of online dating, and a well-meant gesture from Esther’s daughter, Zoe, threatens to uncover a long-held secret…
The new series will see the return of Shipton Abbott’s much-loved residents, including Kris Marshall as DI Humphrey Goodman, Sally Bretton as Martha Lloyd, Zahra Ahmadi as DS Esther Williams, Dylan Llewellyn as PC Kelby Hartford, Barbara Flynn as Martha’s mother Anne Lloyd, and Felicity Montagu as Margo Martins. Season 2 will also bring back Jade Harison as CS Charlie Woods, Melina Sinadinou as Zoe, Eva Feiler as Lucy, Isaac Vincent-Norgate as Ryan, Amelia Vitale as Hannah, and Selwyn the Duck.
Much like Death in Paradise, guest stars will pass through Shipton Abbott every week to join in the mysterious fun. For Season 2, featured performers include Peter Davison (All Creatures Great & Small), Kevin Bishop (Muppet Treasure Island), Adam Fogerty (The Gallows Pole), Emma Fielding (Van der Valk), Danny Webb (Endeavour), Dan Renton Skinner (Still Up), Paul Bradley (The Burning Girls), Peter Landi (Ted Lasso), Nicholas Woodeson (Paddington 2), Malcolm Storry (Doc Martin), Carolyn Pickles (Broadchurch), Jeff Rawle (Around the World in 80 Days), Jayde Adams (Good Omens), and Souad Faress (The Sandman).
Beyond Paradise was created by Robert Thorogood and Tony Jordan, the latter of whom is the lead writer on the new set of six episodes. Helmer Sandy Johnson returns as the lead director for Season 2, and Lindsay Hughes is the producer. Jordan, Tim Key, and Belinda Campbell are executive producers for Red Planet Pictures, Danielle Scott-Haughton for BBC, and Reemah Sakaan and Stephen Nye for BritBox International. Beyond Paradise is filmed in and around Devon and Cornwall.
Beyond Paradise Season 2 will debut on BBC One on Friday, March 22, 2024, and follow on BritBox in the U.S. two weeks later on Thursday, April 4, 2024. Both will stream on a weekly schedule.
