'The Agency' To Come Online in November
Paramount+ and Showtime have officially confirmed that their newest show, The Agency, will arrive before the end of 2024. Initially announced in early 2023 under the title The Department, the series is an English-language remake of the French hit The Bureau, and was initially billed as the successor to Showtime's major hit, Homeland. However, with the growing success of English language remakes of the Walter Presents series, Showtime is now leaning more heavily into the idea this is their grand remake of a French spy series, studded with A-list actors from both sides of the pond.
For those who have not mosied over to AMC+ to check out The Bureau (Le Bureau des Legendes), the original series centers on the daily life and missions of agents within France's principal external security service and its "Bureau of Legends," which is made up of deep-cover agents on long-term missions who live under false identities for years.
The Agency resets this same concept within the American CIA (hence the name), featuring the same character, Mathieu Kassovitz, whose experience kicks off the French series when he's ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to Paris after over a decade in Syria, only to have it refuse to be left behind. In this case, it's American, now renamed Martian, stationed in the same area but ordered to return to London.
Here's The Agency's synopsis:
A fresh take on the critically acclaimed hit French drama Le Bureau des Legendes, the all-new political thriller follows Martian, a covert CIA agent ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites. His career, real identity, and mission are pitted against his heart, hurling them into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage.
Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) leads the series as Martian, with Jodie Turner-Smith (Anne Boleyn) as the love he left behind Samia. The show is also headlined by American actors Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Martian's contact, Henry, and Richard Gere (Pretty Woman) as his boss, Bosko.
Fassbender, Turner-Smith, Wright, and Gere are joined by a roster that includes Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), David Harewood (Sherwood), Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts), Adam Nagaitis (The Responder), Ambreen Razia (Starstruck), Bilal Hasna (Extraordinary), John Magaro (The Umbrella Academy), Ray BLK (Champion), Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (The Ipcress File), Andrew Brooke (Criminal Record), Harriet Sansom Harris (Atlantic Crossing), India Fowler (The Nevers), Kurt Egyiawan (House of the Dragon), Saura Lightfoot-Leon (Hoard), Alex Reznik (Babylon), Reza Brojerdi (SOKO Wismar) and Sabrina Wu (Murderbot).
Jez & John-Henry Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow) wrote all nine episodes, Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice) directed the first two. The Butterworths, Wright, and Fassbender are executive producers along with George Clooney & Grant Heslov via their Smokehouse Pictures; Keith Cox & Nina L. Diaz of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios; David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin & Bob Yari of 101 Studios; Alex Berger for TOP-The Originals Productions; and Ashley Stern & Pascal Breton for Federation Studios/Federation Entertainment of America.
The Agency debuts with two episodes on Paramount+ with Showtime on Friday, November 29, 2024, followed by one a week through the end of the year.
