'Sex Education' Confirms Season 4 Cast, Including Thaddea Graham

Asa Butterfield and Mimi Keene in Sex Education Season 4

Sex Education star Asa Butterfield posted an Instagram a couple of weeks back of himself on set for Season 4 as Otis, heralding that class was soon to be back in session. But his solo photo did not answer many of the questions fans have about the series' return, which upended just about everything at the end of Season 3 with the announcement that Moordale would be closed and bulldozed. Since then, all that's come out is the stars who will not be back, which at this point stands at about a half dozen departees. However, their departures allow new characters to come in, with multiple new faces joining the show.

The series also has confirmed returnees for this season, which include a couple of actors fans weren't sure would be back. Maeve, played by Emma Mackey, departed Moordale to head overseas to America to attend an Ivy League college. With Mackey having landed the role in the Bronte biopic, Emily, it was uncertain if the actor would be back for another round. But not only will the actress be back for Season 4, but her character gives the series an excuse to add a Canadian to the cast. Dan Levy, best known for Schitt's Creek and The Great Canadian Baking Show, will join the series as Thomas Molloy, a famous author and Maeve's US course tutor.

And then, of course, there's the big question of Ncuti Gatwa, who landed the role that will define his career when he was cast as the Fourteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, starting with next year's 60th anniversary. The excellent news is filming for the anniversary special has finished, and the first block for Season 14, which follows in 2024, won't begin until November, giving Gatwa a perfect window to manage both projects. The new cast list for Season 4 confirms he'll be back as well, as Otis' BFF Eric, for whom this will be the last year of school.

Here's the Sex Education Season 4 logline:

Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier - their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, whilst Eric is praying they won’t be losers again. But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students - they thought they were progressive but this new college is another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being… kind?! Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A Level and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him. Over in the US, Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her, whilst adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus…

Along with Butterfield, Gatwa, and Mackey, a good portion of the Moordale class will make their way to Cavendish. Aimee-Lou Wood is back as Maeve's BFF Aimee Gibbs, Connor Swindells as Eric's ex Adam Groff, Kedar Williams-Stirling as Jackson, George Robinson as Isaac, Chinenye Ezeudu as Vivienne, Dua Saleh as Cal, and Mimi Keene as Ruby. Also returning: Gillian Anderson (The Crown) as Asa's mother, Jean, Alistair Petrie (Sherlock) as Adam's father, Michael Groff, and Samantha Spiro (Game of Thrones) as Michael's wife, Maureen Groff.

But it's the bevy of new faces coming in that is super intriguing for the new season. With Eric and Otis heading to a new school for Sixth Form, plenty of new students will be added to the mix some of whom may be part of Otis' clinic once he re-establishes. Thaddea Graham (The Irregulars) is joining the series, alongside Alexandra James (The Break) and Marie Reuther, who PBS viewers will recognize from Walter's Choice series Seaside Hotel. The other three, all newcomers to TV, include Imani Yahshua and a pair of trans actors, Felix Mufti and Anthony Lexa.

Sex Education Season 4 is currently filming; it is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2023.
