As the infamous meme goes, "Nature is healing," and yearly fan-favorite series are starting to return to PBS. First out of the gate, the Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar-led mystery series Unforgotten, which now has a release date as part of a packed summer lineup for Masterpiece. The new season, which finished airing in the U.K. at the end of March, will arrive on this side of the pond starting July 11, just in time for the regular PBS "summer of mysteries."

Unforgotten was last seen on PBS in 2019. Season 3's mystery may have followed the series formula initially, but unlike the other cold cases, this one ended on a brutal note. After nearly bungling the case, and her home life falling apart, DCI Cassie Stuart (Walker) found herself facing down a psychopathic killer. The experience broke her, telling her partner, DI Sunny Khan (Bhaskar), that she couldn't do it anymore and walking away. With no immediate renewal, fans were left unsure if the show would return. Eventually, the show was renewed with filming beginning in January of 2020. And then, of course, the pandemic happened.

Thankfully the show is back, and Season 4 has garnered the best reviews of the series so far. And though the pandemic meant the show missed the 2021 spring season, that means the show will become part of the summer lineup, filling in for the delayed Grantchester and Endeavour that usually air in July and August. Moreover, this time it will come paired with another mystery show, with Professor T (starring Ben Miller) airing at 10 p.m., following Unforgotten's 9 p.m. slot.

Season 4 will pick up not long after Season 3's conclusion, with Cassie still seriously considering retirement from the force. Before she can take the plunge, a new cold case arrives in the form of a headless and handless body stuffed in a freezer and left for decades. That makes this the first very obvious murder from the jump, unlike the other cold cases where bodies are exhumed from rivers or buried in odd places.

Here's the official synopsis:

A unique tattoo on the corpse leads to the discovery of a 1990 crime involving four people now spread around the country. Ram Sidhu and his wife Anna live in London, with Liz Baildon and her fiancée Janet in Cambridge, Fiona Grayson and her partner Geoff in the Peak District, and Dean Barton and his wife Marnie living in Rochester. The investigation threatens to shatter their reputations, family relationships, and lives.

As always, the show will feature four suspects from the past who may or may not still be connected in the present. This season's lineup includes Susan Lynch (Killing Eve), Andy Nyman (Peaky Blinders), Phaldut Sharma (Hanna), and Liz White (Call The Midwife) as the possible suspects. In a new twist, some of them are fellow law enforcement officers, making this a case where there may be inside job aspects. Also joining in the cast for this year's six-parter: Sheila Hancock (A Discovery of Witches), Lucy Speed (Marcella), Clare Calbraith (Baptiste), Daniel Flynn (War & Peace), and Alec Newman (The Last Kingdom).

Unforgotten Season 4 will premiere on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at 9 p.m. ET on most local PBS stations. As always, check your local listings.
