Big news, mystery fans – Grantchester will officially return for a fifth season!

The period mystery only just started airing its long-awaited fourth season here in the U.S., but that doesn’t mean we can’t take a second to celebrate the fact that our adventures in the picturesque town of Grantchester are far from over.

Given that original star James Norton just excited the popular mystery series in the Season 4 premiere, no one was entirely sure what to expect regarding the show’s future. Sure, the show tapped Tom Brittney to replace him as new vicar Will Davenport, but that’s no guarantee that Grantchester would still work with an updated  version of its popular main duo.

This renewal announcement indicates that PBS and ITV certainly seem to believe the series’ has the ability to live on and thrive in a post-Sydney Chambers era, even if he is the character the show was originally based on.

Brittney and original cast member Robson Green are slated to return for the series’ fifth season, which will reportedly pick up a year on from Season 4.

Series five picks up a year later, in Cambridge in 1957, the year Prime Minister Harold Macmillan told the British people that they had ‘never had it so good’. For many of the residents of Grantchester, it really will feel like they’re in a delightful new Eden, but for all the talk of paradise on earth and faith-in-action, Geordie Keating knows that trouble is never far away.

"We are very excited that Grantchester is returning for a fifth series. The audience has taken the pairing of Robson Green and Tom Brittney to their hearts and we are delighted to be able to continue the story of Geordie and Will with Masterpiece and ITV," executive producer Emma Kingsman-Lloyd said in a press release.

Season 5 will film this summer, and further casting news will be announced in due course.

In the meantime, Grantchester’s fourth season is airing Sunday nights on Masterpiece, and PBS Passport members can binge the entirety of the new episodes right now.

Do you have feelings about more Grantchester? Or would you rather move on to something else? Let’s discuss in the comments.
